Illustration Framed on Canvas: 'Minute Maid'

About the Item

The murder of John Lennon. The birth of my children. Nixon’s resignation. Brain surgery. Driven by the desire to express myself, and leave a physical record of my life and times, I’ve painstaking recorded each of these events, plus thousands more - personal and not - in my visual journals. I’ve been creating these journals - one for each year - since 1969. They create a comprehensive physical record. These volumes present thousands of design spreads featuring illustrations and collages, plus countless thoughts, observations, opinions, and powerful quotes from literary and journalistic sources. They intertwine my personal world with notable world events and issues, people and places - in politics, literature, business, science, entertainment - and more. As an artist and writer, I feel the unique format of the journals reflects my dual identity. Every page, every spread is a work of art. Anyone who has seen the journals over the last half century has been intrigued, delighted and enthusiastic about them. The readable snippets of copy are artistic elements. Whether they recall the nuclear explosion at Chernobyl, the death of Princess Di, or conversing with Bill Clinton at the Central Park Zoo, they provide another dimension to the work. I have long wanted to share these journals with the outside world. Now, advances in printing are allowing me to convert single pages and spreads into distinctive pieces of art on canvas for homes, offices, anywhere. They are dramatic, whimsical, fantastical, thought-provoking, or simply happy. They look sensational in groups of three, five, or more. Or alone. –-Doug Brin Doug Brin is a visual artist and diarist, writer, journalist, lecturer and teacher. His visual work has been exhibited at galleries in Soho, on 57th Street, and in Riverdale.
