Sir Gerald Festus Kelly RA RHA
Gerald Festus Kelly RA RHA (1879-1972) - Gouache, Still Life with Garden Roses

Unknown

About the Item

A truly enchanting still life work by Sir Gerald Festus Kelly KCVO PRA RHA (1879-1972). This interior still life sits comfortably within the artist's oeuvre, while correlating well with his more impressionistic landscapes and portraits, in both palette and composition. Depicting a bowl of pink garden roses on a hall table, they appear not proud, but slightly drooping and bowed. This casual arrangement, and the bay window setting, adds a certain sense of fleeting momentary elegance. The lace of the window hangings and tablecloth lighten the strong use of colour elsewhere in the work, with their distinctly diaphanous qualities. Kelly painted in slightly varying style throughout his career, with some works more closely resembling this one in both mood and palette. His work 'In the Luxembourg Gardens' displays a notably similar flavour, with structural bands of colour. The artist's skillful approach to texture is almost undetectable, but his nuanced variations make this work all the more impressive. Handsomely presented in a distressed effect gilt wooden frame with darker painted detailing, and wide card mount. Glazed with TruGuard UV Protective conservation glass. Signed to the lower left. Signed. On board.
