About

Pastel landscape, signed lower left by the artist. Groshans came to the United States in 1927 from Germany and studied under Bernard Gussow at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts and was inspired by Renaissance works in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Predominantly a self-taught artist, he participated in the WPA Art Project from 1938-40. After his marriage in 1944 to Yetta Abramowitz, he moved to Manhattan and by 1947 had dedicated himself fully to his art. The 1940s and 1950s were filled with success and exhibitions – repeatedly at the Whitney Museum Annuals, the Carnegie International, and the Metropolitan Museum in 1950 as part of “American Painting Today”. During this time, he also received praise from various publications including The New Yorker, the New York Herald Tribune and Art News. After four years respite on a farm in the Catskills (1953-1957), the couple settled in Weehawken, New Jersey where his studio overlooked the Hudson River. Groshans was elected to the National Academy in 1965 and as an Academician two years later. He was the focus of three one-man retrospectives, each featuring over forty works, at the New Britain Museum of American Art (1973), The Montclair Art Museum (1976) and The Butler Institute of American Art (1986). Groshans’ work is located in both private and public collections I the United States, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Newark Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the New Britain Museum of American Art, the National Academy of Design, the Florence Griswold Museum, the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, the Cape Cod Museum of Art, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, and the Canton Museum of Art.
