Both are highly textured mineral paintings, made with Japanese blue-gold leaves, natural and synthetic minerals and partially resin on Japanese paper mounted on a wood panel. Natural colors include gemstones or precious and semi-precious stones, such as green agate (deep matcha green). Because these substances consist of unique chemical and physical properties, every artwork has unique characteristics and a story to tell, with a sense of connection to the earth. All 4 sides are painted with a 3D-like appearance. It has a matt, sand-like texture for mineral areas and a smooth texture for resin areas.
"Furaha" means joy and happiness in the Swahili language. During this year it was difficult to travel. So I looked through some of the images I had photographed from an earlier trip to the desert with its wide views, amazing colours and BIG sky; somewhere warm and interesting. This is one of a series of paintings influenced by the visit to the deserts of Jordan and Israel. After the fascination of Petra, hewn out of rock, it was the sense of freedom in its immensity, the natural forms of craters and wadis at different times that stimulated me; gold in the morning, purple and orange at dusk.

I use this nail inlay technique to make non-functional objects. The first were wall pieces. These pieces are not for a particular customer so I am much more free to express myself. The imagery and patterns are culled from endless web searches. A favorite has been Japanese stencils called katagami. I have hundreds saved and an equal number altered to fit my liking. My current interest is searching images from artist’s sketchbooks. A favorite is a very quick Donald Judd sketch of a simple object to be fabricated with a large “$60,000” written above.
I have also used prints and drawings by my father.
My current work involves nail patterns on firewood from my Father’s wood pile. He died 20 years ago but his wood pile remains untouched. He was the minimalist’s minimalist - constructing large sculptures from a few strands of yarn. The installation space is transformed with this simple use of this simple material. Feliciano Béjar Ruíz (1920 – February 1, 2007) was a Mexican artist and artisan, best known for a style of sculpture called “magiscopios” which involved various materials along with crystals and/or lenses to play with light or create distorted visions. He was born in rural central Mexico and was completely self-taught as an artist. He was creative as a young child, drawing and creating his first sculpture like pieces from papier-mâché. His art career began in New York, where he had travelled and lived for a time in Hell’s Kitchen. His drawing the attention of Arthur Ewart and Frances Coleman, with the latter helping him have his first exhibition and whose husband helped sponsor his time in Europe. In his later life, Béjar withdrew from the art world for about sixteen years, disillusioned with it and retreating to his ranch in the State of Mexico. He returned in 1998, with a retrospective of his work in Mexico City and continued to show his work until shortly before his death.
He worked as an assistant to a carpenter, sweeping out the shop in exchange for wood scraps. He used these to create toys and even large imaginary cities.
When he was fifteen, he began to teach himself art using various scrap materials. At this time muralist José Clemente Orozco was in his town to paint scenes of the Mexican Revolution on the town library. Bejar brought him some drawings to show, he did not want to see them. Later in life he stated that he did not think well of the muralists and considered them false and frauds. He said that their work was supposedly for the people but they could not be understood without interpretation and the main ones (Rivera, Siqueiros and Orozco) shut out other artists.
When he got to New York in the 1940s, he was disappointed and thought it ugly. He wanted to return but had no money so he had to work menial jobs and live in Hell’s Kitchen. During this time in New York, he was put in touch with English painter Arthur Ewart who encouraged him to get back to art, particularly painting. He also met socialite Frances Colman, while copying paintings...

William Hubard, sometimes known as "Master Hubard," was a British born American artist who settled in Boston in about 1820, in his late teenage years. He opened a gallery on the corner of Milk and Congress Streets at Julien Hall, in the heart of Boston's Financial District. His gallery became well known for Hubard's silhouette's, which he produced prodigiously for sitters in moments, using nothing but black paper, a pair of scissors, and sometimes a dash of gold ink. Hubard filled his gallery with silhouette likenesses of famous people, beggars, fiddlers, great works of architecture, and all types of animals. Each evening he presented a panharmonicon concert in his gallery, and for 50¢ the public was invited to enjoy the gallery, the concert, and have their likeness created by hand in moments by Hubard.
In the early 1830s Hubard married the daughter of a wealthy patron, and moved to Richmond, Virginia, where he won major commissions to paint portraits of notables such as Andrew Jackson, and James Marshall, as well as several commissions from the Virginia General Assembly. Hubard enjoyed a successful career until his death in February 1862, when he was killed in an accidental explosion while making munitions for the Confederate States...
