His photography is characterized by stark contrasts, between black and white, subject and background, subject and object. His work often focuses on the duality between human inability to escape institutionalization and human desire for individualism. His interest in contrast is also reflected in his place of residence: Peña currently inhabits the Cerro neighborhood of Cuba which is home to a mostly poor African-Caribbean population, despite having been an enclave of Havana's richest families in the 19th century.

René Peña graduated from the Higher pedagogic Institute of Foreign Languages, University of Havana with a specialization in English in 1983. In the late 1980s he entered the national world of photography and since 1990 became leader of the new trends of Cuban photography, first by handling interiors and domestic situations in modern-day Cuba and later making studies of his own body in aspects such as negritude, sexual ambiguity and the influence of consumerism through self-portraits. He conceives his series on the basis of a conceptual, formal and structurally different analysis of all the parameters established up to the present, going from a brutal expressionism to a distinct homoeroticism, with strong mystic elements, trends from experimental painting, and a certain theatrical dramatization.
He has had important solo shows and participated in group exhibitions in Cuba, the United States, Venezuela, Canada, France and Germany. His work is part of important collections, not only national but also at world level, such as the National Museum of Fine Arts, Cuba; the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba; Reinhard Schultz Collection, Germany; photographic archive Tuscany, Italy; Southeast Museum of Photography, Daytona, USA; Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas, USA; collection of the province of Hainuat, Belgium; and Lehigh University Pennsylvania...

The Showboat (1933) is a vintage silver gelatin photograph by the renowned Ira Martin. This masterwork was so esteemed, that it was exhibited, in the 1930's, around the United States, including in Brooklyn, Chicago, East Orange, New York, Philadelphia and San Jose.
This silver gelatin photograph exhibits the tonal qualities of a platinum print, and the photograph's composition is extraordinary. The content also exists on several levels. On a basic level, it appears to depict a 1930's crowd watching a barker and performers on the S.S. Duke Mills Showboat, while it is docked on the Mississippi River in New Orleans. However, after contemplating the photo, one sees much additional activity, including African American performers, beneath the word "Plantation", looking down on the show from the boat's balcony; two men holding a conversation and the shadows of a kissing couple reflected on the pavement in the left foreground. Equally remarkable is the near empty right upper quadrant, which depicts a furling American flag against a cerulean blue sky. Frankly, this photograph belongs in a museum, due to the historic uniqueness of a time, place and event that will never be captured in such a profound manner again. Hatay is a visual artist, a healer and a former Rock and Roll photojournalist.
Born in Scotland of a Hungarian physicist/inventor and an English art dealer, she grew up in an international environment. Her father encouraged original thinking and experimentation; her mother nourished her creativity and her intuitive skills. Leaving her home in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, for Munich, Germany, she apprenticed to Bauhaus photographer Frl. Berthe Himmler. The next step was New York City where Hatay began to freelance in all aspects of photography.
It was when she photographed Jimi Hendrix at Madison Square Garden on May 18, 1969 and was inspired by his music that she got a chance to spread her wings artistically. She was initially inspired by his energy, his vision and his originality. "Jimi Hendrix was absolutely amazing - it is not possible to put words to the Experience. He was, and still is, unique. I didn't know at the time I photographed him that he was interested in his music being a healing power. I learned a lot about this aspect of Hendrix about ten years later when I met people who knew him. When they heard how much I was interested in the healing aspects of his music, they shared their stories with me. I used some of this information in my two books, "Jimi Hendrix, The Spirit Lives On" and "Jimi Hendrix, Reflections and Visions".
Nona's experimental techniques were used in her photographs on many other Rock stars, such as Tina Turner, James Brown, and Frank Zappa.
She had a major exhibit of her work in Paris.
