About the Item
Artist Comments
"I imagine sitting on a plane, looking out the window shortly after takeoff, and being struck by the beauty that always moves me when I fly," shares artist Agata Kijanka. Working quickly and instinctively with some of her favorite colors and bypassing too much thought, Agata allows for the visual energy to come through. Using mainly thin, pliable layers of oil and cold wax, Agata rolls on paint with brayers. In addition to this, she smears paint on and then scrapes parts of the surface with silicone brushes. Portions are then removed with solvent.
About the Artist
Artist Agata Kijanka creates sensually textured abstract paintings. Working from visual and emotional memory and imagination, Agata builds each artwork in layers - applying paint with scrapers and brayers, transferring paint from other surfaces, and removing paint with solvent and blades. One of the defining moments for Agata as an artist was when she moved alone to Santa Fe from Seattle in 2008. As she explains, it was "a beautiful place that I love with its rich art related history, plentiful galleries, and inspiring landscapes. I anticipated staying for 6 months but I ended up staying for 4 years." She continued her artistic journey to Sedona, AZ and now lives in Albuquerque where she works from her home studio. Putting down roots in the southwest has influenced Agata's work, especially time in the desert, the sunshine and open skies. When she's not painting, Agata enjoys cooking, gardening in her desert yard, and talking endlessly to her rescue dog.

- Giselle, Original PaintingBy Ryan PickartLocated in San Francisco, CA
Artist Comments
Part of Ryan's long-running series of portraits done in charcoal and oil paint on gold washed paper. Ryan enjoys pairing the fluidity and transparency of oil paint with the substance of charcoal. "Much like the ballet of the same name, "Giselle" combines dramatic patterns with stoic expression," says Ryan. The figure wears an abstract dress of dripping circles, her hair in modernist angles. She looks intensely at the viewer, her slender frame elongated by her strong pose.About the Artist
