About the Item

Aldo Chaparro is a Mexican/Peruvian artist whose work focuses on the use of sculpture and oainting to explore form in post-industrial ways. He currently lives and works between Mexico City, Los Angeles, Madrid, and Lima. Chaparro explores form through void, matter and the human body using quick processes to transform prefabricated materials into unique objects. Using elements commonly used for construction, he creates forms in balance by manipulating and subtracting matter. Much of his work is based on quick processes, which forces him to have a close relationship with his materials. One of the premises of Chaparro's work is the concept of time and his relationships with prefabricated materials, such as beams and sheets. He also explores ideas based on the interactions between different materials and disciplines; from curatorship, film, public art, architecture, industrial and editorial design (Editorial Celeste, Mexico, 2000-2014), to music, sculpture, painting, installation, and so on. This tendency to jump from one language to another has generated in him a constant concern about the processes in art and the connection that these disciplines have with broader areas of society. In this way, his work has become a testimony of various processes, discarding in some way the idea that the value of the work is in the resulting object and its strict relationship with the art world. Chaparro currently has studios in Mexico (Mexico City, Valle de Bravo, and Monterrey), Peru (Lima), Spain (Madrid), and France (Paris). He distributes his time among them, seeking to generate a more intimate and deep connection with the cities where he develops his projects. Aldo Chaparro’s work is part of important collections around the world. It is included in the collections of the The Jumex Foundation/Mexico, The Coppel Collection/Mexico, The CIFO – Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation/Miami, FL/The Helga de Alvear Foundation, Spain/ Pontificia Universidad Católica de Lima/ Peru, Simon de Pury/ UK, The Douglas Baxter Collection/New York, Domenico de Sole/Hilton Head, USA, Guler Sabanci/Istanbul Turkey, Pierre Huber Collection/Switzerland and the Jorge Perez Museum Collection/Miami, FL.Likewise, his Window Displays project in each of his studios has gradually become an important platform and benchmark for young artists in each city where he works.

  • Tuesday's Drive (Diptych)
    By Karen Silve
    Located in Solana Beach, CA
Karen Silve developed an interest in Post-Impressionist and Fauvist painting, and they informed her early figurative abstractions. She studied in the graduate painting and design programs at the University of Denver, creating abstract work that was inspired by the landscape and by the color lessons she learned in France. Later, the Abstract Expressionist painters Willem de Kooning and Joan Mitchell, and the German artist Gerhard Richter became important influences on her work. In 1993, Silve moved to Portland, Oregon, worked in graphic design and began to explore painterly process in a series of meditative paintings. In the late 1990s, she created two extended groups of paintings, first the Musician Series, and then the Cellist Series. Both series focused on players with their instrument, and on a feeling for music expressed through abstracting the human figure, gestural brush strokes and vibrant color. After this she moved on to rhythmic, calligraphic brush strokes and drips of paint. Evolving from this period is the ongoing series of abstract paintings that Silve continues to create. Silve has exhibited her work extensively in solo exhibitions including at the Portland Performing Arts Center, the Forsyth Center Gallery at Texas A&M University, the Visual Art Center of Northwest Florida, the Tuscaloosa Performing Arts Center and the West Linn Public Library in Oregon. Group exhibitions include those at The Institute for American Universities, Aix-in-Provence, France, the Jemison-Carnegie Heritage Hall...

  • 'Femme Assise'. Large Mixed-media Montage on Board.
    By Armand Avril
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Imposing and very large scale mixed media 'assemblage' by French artist Armand Avril. The work includes the French tricolour flag colours, his symbolic cat sculptures and a highly colourful geometric image of the artist's mother sitting in a chair. The work is signed and dated to the reverse and comes with a certificate of authenticity from the gallery. This montage fully demonstrates Avril's geometric period whilst also expressing the humour and joy that he puts into all his work. A very strong sculptural image and a feast for the eyes in searching for and recognising the everyday objects used in making this piece come alive. This montage is made from wood pieces, plywood, oil paint, acrylic, bottle top and nails . The more sculpted areas of the piece stand out up to 3cm from the frame. Armand Avril was born in 1926 in Lyon. His father, Marcel Avril was a painter and collector of African art. At 16 Armand became an apprentice shepherd in Provence. Avril could always be seen equipped with a sketchbook and a book on the history of art whilst tending his flock. It was not until the age of 30, in 1956, that Armand embarked on painting as an autodidact, influenced by Raoul Dufy, Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse and the Lyonnaise School of Painting. He exhibited for the first time in 1957. In 1960, he left for a one-year trip to Africa. There he met the painter Jean Arène who introduced him to the village of Cotignac in the Var and to Louis Pons...
