About the Item
Rising Collection, combines two key elements of my process --- my signature use of needlepoint, plus, mixing powdered pigments, gesso, and marble dust to create my own colors. These elements have been part of my style for some time. The use of these two physical processes is a homage to the art historical tradition of mixing paint and to the use of textiles, usually associated with women, throughout the history of craft.
In the Rising Collection, after several layers of paint are applied, I cut a hole into the canvas. I then use hemp cord to suture the needlepoint through this hole. I use the word “suture” because it symbolizes physical and emotional repair to me. Once the needlepoint is attached, I apply a clear resin to preserve the needlepoint. A trestle framework of thread connects the two distinct surfaces. Smooth vs. rough; one color vs. many colors; and flat vs. shiny, all remain in high contrast. The use of opposites is instrumental to my narrative. I am questioning if art can be a healing, unifying process, not only for myself, but also for those who experience the work.

Andrée B. Carter
Andrée B. Carter was born and raised in New Orleans. She has lived in Seattle and Los Angeles, and now resides in Palm Desert. Andrée’s love of color and texture is evident in the way she treats the surfaces of her work. Andrée’s process combines two key elements—many, many layers of paint plus her signature use of handmade needlepoint. By stitching onto the surface, cutting holes into the canvas, and/or using collage, she creates a history embedded into the paintings. Paper, fabric, thread, textiles, and other media, all combine to add depth to the physicality of her work.

“PRLS-1000” contemporary abstract collage, mixed media, purple, blue, multi
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
"PRLS-1000" is part of Eric Mack's urban grid series. Using a grid to create the framework of the painting, Mack creates movement across the piece with dynamic techniques of washy underpainting underneath matted pieces of paper, and thread. His paintings have been described as "intellect on top of emotion."
Eric Mack (b.1976, Charleston) creates mathematically based renderings with a distinct post-modern twist. Works are informed with super imposed grids, patterns, and portals. Layered surfaces are created with paint, found objects, natural fibers, and synthetic substrates that explore the systems of our visual world.
His most recent show “Charting the Terrain” is on view now at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles was covered by the Los Angeles Times, KCRW, and LALA Magazine. His last solo exhibition was titled "Impossible Architectures" at The University of North Carolina...
