About the Item

Fons et origo, which in Latin means Source and Origin, includes 8 wall-sculptures. These circular shapes sprout long roots in delicate hand-cut formations. Some of the roots have tiny metal-wire structures attached in the back which allow for a firmer shape. Angelica starts by taking pictures of her own paintings (ink and acrylic on photo paper), then digitally adjusts and layers colors, and prints the final images using archival pigment and different types of photographic paper to create desired optical effect. Sometimes she re-prints the same image in layers several times to get a very saturated color (like in Fons et origo #3). ‘Our present existence is just a cosmic blink. I am trying to hear the beat of the cosmos within myself, the primordial force, to sense the interconnectedness with nature, with all the powers and energies of the universe. To go beyond a sense of separation and to be able to cherish the universality that is implied by our interdependence. Inspired by the times in which the Great Mother was the Great Cosmic Soul (“At the very dawn of religion, God was a woman. Do you remember?- Merlin Stone), I contemplate on the origins of being which connect us across borders, cultures, ethnicities, and religions. Meditating on the original place of origin, reaching for our roots within the cosmos allows me to rediscover and worship our oneness while reconnecting myself to a sense of the infinite. Because beyond the roots of earthly life, we are all immersed in a living universe, in a cosmic placenta. -Angelica Bergamini "One of the functions of mythology is to present an image of the cosmos in such a way that it becomes the carrier of the mystical realization, so every time you look at it, the walls of space and time open out into the deep dimension of mystery, which is a dimension within ourselves, as well out there" - Joseph Campbell. Angelica Bergamini was born in Viareggio (Italy) in 1973. She studied in Spain at the Facultad de Bellas Artes of Granada and the Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid and holds a degree in Painting from the Accademia di Belle Arti of Florence (Italy). Bergamini’s research explores the symbolism of colors in an open dialogue with human emotions and natural shapes, while her experimental approach manifests through different mediums: from painting and paper-cuts assemblages to video and sculptural installations. Her works have been exhibited in New York (Tanja Grunert; White Box; BRIC Arts Media; Photo New York), London (Chelsea space), Paris (Galerie Arnaud Lefebvre), Stockholm (Färgfabriken), Hong Kong (Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery), Milan (Pari&Dispari). Her work is in private collections in USA, Europe, China, and Israel. She is currently working on a video animation series based on a selection of her mixed media on paper. In the last year, her videos have been shown in Cuba, France, Italy, and Cyprus.

She is the founder of the INSCRIRE Association. In 2016, she was elected member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Arts and Fine Arts of Belgium. Group Exhibitions Spain: 2016, The "5Contemporary" Paris gallery presented a group show at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Genalguacil, Spain. The show included important artists such as Françoise Schein, Mimouni and Pedro Castrortega. Born in Brussels , Françoise Schein left Belgium after studying architecture at the higher institute of architecture of the French community - La Cambre where she wrote her thesis on fundamental rights, then studied urban design at the Columbia University in the City of New York . She lived 11 years in New York where she begins a work on cartography territories. Subway map Floating on NY Sidewalk is his first monumental urban sculpture located at 110 Greene Street in SoHo (1985). At that time her works are abstract landscapes of cities, made up of networks, lines, trajectories, territories, founding texts and stories. They are constructed of very diverse materials and light. Returning back to Europe in 1989, she continues to work on what she calls her drawings-laboratories while beginning to integrate works in cities on civic themes, the main ones: at the Concorde metro station in Paris in 1991 and then in Brussels, Saint-Gilles , in 1992, these two projects took her to Lisbon in 1993 where she lived for five years and produced two monumental works (in azulejos) for the city of Lisbon at Parque metro station ( 1994) and another for the city of Stockholm at the Universitetet station (1998). She continues to travel to cities where she builds successively projects in Haifa , on the facade of the Beth Hagefen Jewish-Arab Cultural Center with Michel Butor (1994). Then she lives in Berlin where she builds the Westhafen station (2000) which takes her to Bremen to make her first human rights park, Rhododendronpark (2002). In 2005, she made the monumental Time Zone Clock in Coventry in 2005. Since 1999, she has also settled in Rio de Janeiro and initiated participatory artistic projects with the underprivileged population of the favelas . Since then, with the help of a locally trained team, many projects have been carried out, including one in Copacabana and more than 20 in different favelas (from 1999 to 2016). These works transformed the Rio workshop into sustainable development for the people who invested it. In Sao Paulo, since 2009, Françoise Schein has produced a monumental work with the participation of 1000 young people from the favela schools at Luz subway station.   • Snakish (Curvy Abstract Minimalist Encaustic Wall Sculpture in Black and White)

    Abstract minimalist three-dimensional wall sculpture in black and white "Snakish II", made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022 hand-stitched paper, beeswax (encaustic) and thread 36 x 10 x 3 inches hangs with a small thread notch on back extremely lightweight, weighs no more than 1.5 lbs. Excellent condition and ready to hang This abstract minimalist three-dimensional wall sculpture was made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022. The playful motif of hand-stitched paper, layered with black and white acrylic paint and coated with encaustic, is inspired by the artist's interest in architecture and blueprint drawings. The winding segments of white and black encaustic layered paper are assembled in a curving, snake-like formation, which are then hand-sewn by the artist. The lightweight wall sculpture hangs with a small thread notch, installed by the artist on the back of the piece. About the artist: Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY.Donise English has received numerous awards including a 2018 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting; the Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Purchase Prize from the “11th National Juried Exhibition” at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland; 1st Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts,” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut; the Joseph A. Artist Statement: I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure.     Jo Yarrington’s photographs, prints, works on paper, glass sculptures and architecturally-based installations have been shown in exhibitions at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Yale University, Cornell University, the Museum of Glass, the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Artists Space, St. John the Divine Cathedral, Grounds for Sculpture, the Museum of American Glass and ODETTA, among others. International exhibitions have included Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow Cathedral, Glasgow University, Galeria Sala Uno and Centro de las Artes de Guanajuato. She represented the United States at the Sharjah Biennial, United Arab Emirates and participated in the Berlin Biennial. in 2010 she received the Bronze Prize, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Skopje, Macedonia. Yarrington is a recipient of artist grants and Fellowships from the Pollock Krasner Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism. She has received Residency Fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, the Museum of Glass, the Museum of American Glass, the Bridge Virtual Residency/ SciArt Center, the Lucile Walton Fellow/Mountain Lake Biological Station, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, the Anderson Center and the Ucross Foundation, among others. International grants and fellowships have included the Banff Center for Arts and Creativity/Canada, SIMS Residency/ Iceland, Cill Rialaig Artists Residency/Ireland, the Burren College of Art Residency/Ireland and the American Scandinavian Foundation. She is a Professor of Visual and Performing Arts at Fairfield University and lives and works in New York City. STATEMENT In site-specific exhibitions, public art commissions, collaborative and individual projects Jo Yarrington has used varied combinations of glass, waxed surfaces, found artifacts and experimental analog photography to investigate the way we perceive – searching for, experimenting with and developing throughout a sensory-based vernacular. Her mostly translucent materials function as physical framework and symbolic membrane. Light, both natural and ambient, provides a kinetic or time-based element to her work. Scale and the integration of architecture are also pivotal components. In the 6-part installation for the two-person exhibition Illuminated, Yarrington continues her interest in the connections between vision, sound and language. In Mute-ability: Compositions 1 – 6, her title for this light-based comprehensive work, she combines the words mute and malleability.
