About the Item
Shadows cast by light shone through a translucent and loosely concentric gel pattern on clear plexiglass create an elegant non-material extension of the image. The painting is wall mounted and hangs about four inches from the wall. Aluminum clips are used to suspend the piece from the ceiling or from two discrete metal arms on the wall.
Ania Machudera was born in Poland where she has studied biology and primary teaching at the University of Lodz. Machudera emigrated from Poland to Canada in 1990. At OCAD University, in Toronto, she studied drawing and painting and received her BFA in 2005. For the last 15 years, Machudera’s work has been shown in public and private galleries in Toronto and in Poland, and it has been reviewed several times in the Globe and Mail. Her work is held in private and corporate collections.
"I use Optics, the branch of physics, which involves the behavior and properties of light and reflection to emphasize the complexity of relationship between the conscious and the unconscious as materiality. I work like a scientist exploring hidden laws of the visible and the invisible process, always as a presence, but not always understood. Through this process I wanted to collapse the notion of time, which closely relates to materiality of the body, and to shine the light on the shadow, a major factor of human experience." –Ania Machudera
