Motke Blum was born in Racacun, Romania in 1925. Early in his childhood, the Blum family moved to Bucharest where they settled in a house situated near a circus. The circus would become young Blum's greatest love. He befriended several of the clowns and other performers and, when not painting or playing in clay, Blum could be found enjoying the company of these spirited entertainers. These experiences would later become a recurring theme in many of his works of art. In 1938, he was taken by the Romanian Iron Guard. When the Germans invaded Romania, Blum was taken to a forced labor camp. Even during his imprisonment, he continued to create art, painting on the walls of the camp. He escaped the Nazi camp in 1944 and boarded an immigrants' ship to Israel. One of the three ships in the convoy was sunk by a German torpedo. Motke later incorporated shipwrecks, boats, and other maritime subjects into several of his paintings. Alexander Raymond Katz, Hungarian / American (1895 – 1974) Alexander Raymond Katz was born in Kassa, Hungary, and came to the United States in 1909. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. In the late 1920s, he worked as a director of the Poster Department at Paramount Studios. He was appointed the Director of Posters for the Chicago Civic Opera in 1930. A WPA muralist, illustrator and modernist painter especially known for paintings with Jewish themes and narrative American scene works. Many notable Jewish artists worked for the WPA amongst them Ben Shahn, William Gropper, Aaron Bohrod and many more. During the Great Depression, notable architect Frank Lloyd Wright urged Katz to become a muralist. In 1933, he was commissioned to paint a mural for the Century of Progress exposition in Chicago. In 1936, he painted the mural History of the Immigrant for the Madison, Ill., post office. Katz’s works were included in various exhibitions and now are part of several museum collections, including those of the Art Institute of Chicago; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and the Jewish Museum, New York. His murals, bas-reliefs and stained glass designs adorn more than 200 Jewish synagogues in the United States. Katz and other Jewish artists in Chicago who expressed Jewish and Biblical themes were inspired by the artist Abel Pann (1883-1963). Pann, who is regarded as the leading painter of the Land of Israel, exhibited in the Art Institute of Chicago in 1920. Early in his career, Katz began to explore the artistic possibilities inherent in the characters of the Hebrew alphabet. He developed aesthetic and philosophical interpretations of each letter and became the leading innovator and pioneer in the field of Hebraic art. Katz applies this concept in the woodcut Moses and the Burning Bush. Hebrew letters appears in Moses’ head, his cane and inside the flame. The initial of Moses’ name crowns his head. The letter in the flame is the first letter of the name of God. A combination of images and Hebrew letters appeared commonly in illustrations of the scene Moses and the Burning Bush in the Haggadah, the book of Passover. Canadian artist, designer, teacher and writer Stephen James Andrews was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1922. Studied art at Winnipeg School of Art, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Camberwell School of Arts, London, England, privately with Martin Bloch in London, England, at the Académie Julian, Paris, France, and the Scuola del Mosaics, Ravenna, Italy. Died in Spain in 1995. A collage may sometimes include magazine and newspaper clippings, ribbons, paint, bits of colored or handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other found objects, glued to a piece of paper or canvas. Entitled The Eagle Flies on Friday, this work on paper depicts a Bald eagle flying in the late afternoon on a Friday. The two guitars crossed in the upper left-hand corner and a French accordion hidden in the left bottom right corner give a celebratory feel to the image. A distant flock of purple swifts inhabit the right upper middle portion of the image. A purple indigo plant overlays the turquoise Spanish guar on the left. Undulating light blue lines depict water flowing overlay an emerging dark blue palmetto partially obscuring the accordion on the bottom right corner. A blue orb above the eagle symbolizes the New Blue moon signaling new beginnings. This is a unique multiple oil relief print on paper. Unique. because it's one of a kind. Although printmaking processes are used there are no multiples made. Only one. This work is made by printing with different relief blocks multiple times, brush painting, and airbrushing. The ink and paints used are oil-based. Because of the multiple printing techniques, the reverse contains notations in graphite pencil, and ink colors to be used on blocks.
