Original watercolor, gouache and ink abstract on archival paper by the well known New Hope, Pennsylvania artist, Lloyd Raymond Ney. Signed and dated lower left, 1961. Condition is very good. Strong, vibrant colors. Presently unframed. The artwork was mounted by the artist onto Nelson show card board. Provenance: A Pennsylvania estate.. Lloyd Raymond Ney was an American non-objective artist. Known as Bill Ney, he was born in Friedenburg, Pennsylvania March 8th, 1893, the son of William W. Ney and Sadie Maidenford. He studied at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. In 1918 he won a Cresson Fellowship to study in Europe. In the 1920's Ney traveled to France where he studied and painted in Paris among the vital European modernist community. He lived at the Hotel de Versailles, 60 Boulevard Montparnasse. During this period Ney created his major work, "The Drinkers," Later, the artist wrote extensively about the process of developing this work and the transforming experience of integrating the Modernist ideal he had witnessed in Paris. After returning to the United States, Ney settled in New Hope, PA, an established art community between New York and Philadelphia. Unlike more New Hope artists who followed impressionism in the early 20th century, Ney embraced a more expressive contemporary style including non-objective works. He was among a group of artist known as the "Independents," who challenged the traditional subject matter of regional artists. They formed a new exhibition group. Here for your consideration is a well executed mixed media painting composed of India ink and watercolor wash of a beautiful showgirl Signed lower left and dated 1980. Condition is excellent. Recently professionally re matted and housed in it original brass thin gallery frame. Overall framed measurements are 23 by 20 inches. Provenance: A Sarasota, Florida collector. As a child, growing up in the '30s and '40s, Earl Linderman was fascinated by the comic strips and Saturday matinees. Nahum Tschacbasov Biography : Russian-American artist Nahum Tschacbasov (1899-1984) is known for his cubo-surrealistic works which feature a strong psychological element. Some of his work bears a resemblance to work of another Russian-American artist--David Burliuk. He was somewhat of a late starter, moving to Paris in 1932 to study under Adolph Gottlieb, Marcel Gromaire and Fernand Leger. He had his first exhibition in Paris in 1934. He then returned to the US where he joined Rothko and Gottlieb at the Galery Seccession. He was one of the co-founders of The Ten, a group of social conscious abstract painters which included Rothko, Gottlieb, Joseph Solman and Ilya Bolotowsky, among others. In 1944, he began to work at Stanley Hayter's Atelier 17, a center for surrealistic ideas. Between 1936 and 1943, he had five one-man exhibitions at the ACA Galleries and participated in five group shows. He also exhibited at the Whitney, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Knox Albright Museum, the Chicago Institute of Fine Art and Corcoran, among others. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Met, the Whitney, the Brooklyn Museum and the Jewish Museum. The art of Philip Wittmann is founded on signals. For him, signs serve as a bridge between abstraction, reality and writing, too. When he was 26 years old, he began painting as a hobbyist using 'pure' abstraction. However, he believed his work lacked a solid foundation upon which to grow. ​He discovered a book on the origins of the Chinese alphabet, which origins are essentially signs, in 2008 while taking a calligraphy class. The 26 letters of our Latin alphabet are less pictorial than the Chinese characters as we know them now. He discovered that pictorial representation is more prevalent when examining the origins of alphabets—all alphabets, in fact—because there is frequently a similarity between the sign's true meaning and what it is meant to represent. For instance, the symbol for a turtle in the original Chinese script resembles a turtle. Wittmann loves signs as they leave room for interpretation. For instance, if one writes “the sky is blue”, one will make for themself a mental representation of a blue sky, even if each one-off us will probably have some nuance in our own mental representation of that blue sky.
