About the Item

Guadalajara 1898-1984 Mexico city Successful cartoonist and accomplished illustrator, Orozco Romero, as with many of his generation, broke away from the tradition of social realism which defined Mexican art well into the 20th century. HIs father, a tailor, had the foresight to have son schooled by Luis de La Torre, an itinerant painter, believing experience over academic teaching would be more beneficial. This early influence of thinking outside the box, his extraordinary ability at portraiture and studies in Europe years later with the influences of surrealism and cubism, formed, among other factors, an exceptionally nuanced approach to his art and at the age of 30, on the occasion of his first exhibition in Mexico City, his departure from caricaturist to painter was established. Many solo exhibitions soon followed here and in the U.S. and in Mexico City, 1951, he was given an exhibition at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. Soon after in 1958 he participated in Venice Biennale and in 1968 MAM (El Museo de Arte Moderno) was to give Orozco Romero a solo show. Alongside his prolific body of work, Orozco Romero embarked on a career of noble cultural achievements - such as the co-founding of La Esmeralda, (The National School of Painting, Sculpture, and Printmaking) and the Movimiento del Taller Libre - where he taught, at both institutions, for over 20 years. Orozco Romero was a member of The Academy of Arts, The Salon de la Plastica Mexican and received the National Prize for Art in 1980. Orozco Romero was a decisive figure who played a pronounced role in the trajectory of Mexican art in the 20th century and whose works are in collections worldwide. This signed work was part of the personal collection of Pedro Ramirez Vasquez, renowned architect, notably of El Museo de Antropologia, CDMX. Size given is outside dimensions.
