About the Item
“Zig Zag” by Catherine Howe, 2016. Acrylic and interference mica pigment and resin on canvas, 60 x 48 inches. Howe's abstracted still life florals are painted with a matte white gesso mixture that is applied with thick, sweeping, gestural brushstrokes. The interference mica pigment on the canvas delivers a subtly reflective background which changes from silver and gold.
NY artist, Catherine Howe is widely admired for her painterly works that are an amalgam of materials that reference both the baroque and nature. Her paintings, which at times attain the quality of low relief, use nature as a springboard for a highly active imagination. Influenced by New York School abstraction, as well as the rococo, and 17th century Dutch still life paintings, the expansive and exuberant paintings combine the iridescent, rich backgrounds of mica, contrasted by the thick, mat, sweeping strokes of white acrylic.
Catherine Howe’s paintings have been exhibited extensively in the United States and abroad and has been reviewed in major publications, including the NY Times, Art in America, and ArtForum. She has a MFA from SUNY Buffalo and is currently a Professor on the Graduate Painting Faculty at the New York Academy of Art, where she leads a seminar on contemporary art.
