About the Item
Ryoko Endo was born into a traditional family in Fukushima, Japan and attended a
Catholic mission school. As a child, her mother encouraged her to wear a glove on her
dominant left hand so that she would learn to use her right- as it was thought that left-handed
children brought shame onto a family. Because of this experience, she can
equally paint with both hands. Endo studied graphic design and typography at Musashino
Art University in Tokyo. In 1994, she moved to New York City and began attending
classes the Art Students League. One of her instructors, Kikuo Saito, inspired her to
create colorful abstract paintings, which continues to be her focus today.
Ryoko Endo’s paintings explore the union between color and movement. She pursues the
possibilities of various color combinations, which convey emotion. Movement is also
important—the way she moves each element empowers her paintings. Shapes dissolve
and become meaningless and brushstrokes vary according to speed, thickness, density,
and rhythm.

- Cypher #16By Tim CraigheadLocated in New Orleans, LAFramed with an archival mat and plexiglass with a dark maple wood frame. Framed dimensions are approximately 22 x 18 inches. Craighead describes his work as inhabiting a space between objective and nonobjective painting. The combination of these two worlds, serve as a matrix for what are essentially autobiographical paintings. He is interested in the symbolic potential of the objective world and the possibilities abstraction presents in suggesting the unknown. For a year in the mid-1990’s, circumstances forced Craighead out of his studio and he was left to work at a kitchen table on...Category
