Craig Alan
"Populus: Soul Affection I" Three-Dimensional Painted Heart Sculpture with Frame

About the Item

"Populus: Soul Affection I" is a framed three-dimensional mixed media work on fiberglass, depicting numerous figures in unique poses doing activities around a swimming pool. Each of the individual silhouettes is posed differently and has a detailed shadow and accessories, adding personality and whimsy to each character. This piece is finished with a crisp white frame, with D-rings on the back for easy installation. The heart sculpture has a cleat that secures to the interior of the white frame. Pricing includes the frame, and the overall dimensions are 32.5 x 36 x 8.5 inches. Dimensions for the heart only are 16 x 20 x 8 inches. This artwork is comprised of two separate pieces. The heart attachment is removable for transport. About the artist: Craig Alan was born in 1971 in San Bernardino, California. Upon moving to New Orleans as a child, Alan worked as a street portrait artist, using the opportunity to practice his figure drawing, as well as earn money for school and supplies. Creative vision came naturally to Alan and he continued to develop technically and conceptually through his own diligent studies. It was not until his sophomore year at the University of Mobile, Alabama that Alan formally began to train in art. His affinity for the subject was immediately apparent. He continued to concentrate in studio arts, earning an area award for academic excellence. The university’s most prestigious exhibition, “Art with a Southern Drawl,” featured 42 of Alan’s pieces, chosen from a field of more than 1,600 submissions. A minor concentration in theater provided Alan with additional techniques in makeup and set design. This added expertise supported his exploration of mixed media constructions. His skills combine to form elaborate textures, hues and compositions in his pieces. Alan’s artwork reveals a technical sophistication as well as an elaborate imagination. Constantly craving new ways to link contemporary expressions to traditional art, Alan hopes to travel to Europe in search of artistic artifacts as well as fresh and innovative ideas. He also intends to explore his own family roots and cultural nuances in England and Scotland. Eventually, Alan plans to earn his Masters degree in studio arts in order to teach at the college level. His biggest dream is to own and manage his own atelier. He continues to exhibit his artwork across the United States.

  • MIRROR - Contemporary - Geometric Abstract w/ Repurposed Construction Material
    Located in Signal Mountain, TN
"Mirror" is a site specific installation that was exhibited in the show "Dialects of Place(s) by Land Report Collective at COOP Gallery in Nashville, TN. In this piece, Jobe uses industrial materials such as insulation foam, concrete, window screen, and graphite tracing paper to create a patterned structure that protrudes from the corner and carries the viewer's eye upward. At the bottom of the piece, we see delicately balanced concrete on top of pale blue insulation foam. The patterned concrete and insulation foam carries the viewer's eye upwards towards another pop of blue on top of the aluminum window screen frame. The screen gives the viewer a window in which to look through the piece. On one side, this mesh frames the graphite paper and on the other side the viewer can see the patterned concrete and insulation foam. Review from "The Rib" about "Mirror" One of the more surprising works here is Nashville-based Brian Jobe...
