About the Item

On Human Relations (d’après Adolph Freiherr Knigge) - Deborah Sengl 21st Century Animal Figurative Drawing Unique Title: "About dealing with adventurers and drifters" (Original: Ueber den Umgang mit Abentheurern und Pflastertretern) When we think of rules for behavior, Knigge’s name springs immediately to mind - in German-speaking countries it is synonymous with the fine points of etiquette. However, few people realize that this is based on a misunderstanding. Adolph Freiherr Knigge was not at all concerned with etiquette, but rather with how individuals should comport themselves in a society marked by egotism and crudeness. Even more surprising than this misinterpretation and misuse of his writings is that Knigge’s book, now over two hundred years old, is quite relevant to the present day. In ten chapters, he describes the different social biotopes, explaining the ideal way to relate to the “rich and well-bred,” the “lesser folk,” the clergy, people of all stations in life, and many more. He judges them all with unsparing harshness but tries in spite of this to present instructions for ideal interpersonal relations that are dignified and devoid of false pride. Deborah Sengl took on his precise observations and reformulated them for our time in her characteristic manner. In fourteen drawings, accompanied by selected quotes from Adolph Freiherr Knigge’s remarkable work, we are presented with familiar scenes from everyday life. The works aim to make us think about how we relate to others and ourselves in a time marked by ignorance and lack of empathy. Deborah Sengl: 1974 born in Vienna 1992 Study at the University of applied Arts (Prof. Terzic), Vienna 1995 Study at the University of Arts in Berlin/Weißensee 1997 Diploma at the University of Arts (Prof. Attersee), Vienna 2011 – 2013 Lectureship at Mozarteum, Salzburg (Textiles) Deborah Sengl’s works revolve around the themes of disguise and deception. She explores questions of identity and masquerading using the animal kingdom, and employs painting, drawing, and sculpture to create a complex body of work that evokes ideas about – and criticisms of – role-playing in human society, a theme that is particularly relevant today. Inventive, technically brilliant, and rich in fantasy, her works leave a lasting impression. In addition to their precise technique and elements of surprise, they are also distinguished by their substantial depth.

Jennifer Lowe has combined the landscapes, animals and the people of her native Montana with a unique approach to painting. Born in Missoula, Jennifer spent parts of her childhood working in the fields of her grandparent's homesteaded property in Montana's Grasshopper Valley. Lowe's paintings are rendered in the vivid color and rich texture of cattlemarkers and capture the whimsical images from her imagination and the memories of her Montana upbringing. Lowe constructs her own frames and decorates them with a folk art quality - each of which carries an element of the painting that it is made for giving her finished work a unique character. Jennifer began using cattlemarker (an oil-based paintstick) in 1985 while a student at Montana State University. Since graduating in 1987, Lowe has been featured in 22 shows throughout the west.
