About the Item
DeFrancesca’s mixed media “picture-objects” explore the intersections between digital media, photography and painting. Working in hyper-saturated, supernatural shades, DeFrancesca creates fluorescent, atmospheric compositions that reference themes of 21st-century visual culture including urbanity, technology and the digital revolution.
Though these works are highly contemporary in medium and approach, DeFrancesca’s practice draws on the concepts and aesthetic practices set forth by the Post Painterly Abstraction and Op-Art movements of the 1960s. Like Kenneth Noland and Morris Louis, DeFrancesa seeks to remove the artist’s hand by eliminating the tactile application of paint, allowing color, rather than creator, to take center stage as subject. These hybrid art-objects are coated with resin and mounted on layers of plywood, combining traditional craftsmanship with digital innovation.
