Gordon Chandler
"Disc Jacket, " Reclaimed Steel Sculpture, 2011

2011

About the Item

Upon discovering a weathered steel drum that had been warped to resemble the sleeve of a garment, artist Gordon Chandler was inspired to embark on a series of kimono sculptures formed from found metal scraps. With an eye to the aesthetic possibilities of this humble material, Chandler invests the reclaimed steel with sculptural fluidity and a wry sense of form. Crafted from the round end of an industrial barrel, this salvaged steel scrap takes on the shape of a small, flattened jacket. Well-positioned cuts transform the rusted metal into a makeshift garment, drawing the outline of sleeves and a simple collar. The jacket has a dark green coated finish, patterned with subtle stamped text and a wabi-sabi rusted texture. The artist's name and date of creation have been stamped onto a small steel garment label secured just above the collar.
