About the Item
"Inspired by my Facebook and Instagram feeds, I use embroidery, watercolor, and fabric manipulation to render my own “selfies” and portraits of others. My embroidery and watercolor paintings on fabric often incorporate antique textiles with lace edges. My 3-dimensional “dolls,” smaller than one foot in scale, include embroidered text.
By creating tactile representations of private images in anachronistic media, I point out our disconnect with public self-exposure, and question the psychosocial impacts of over-sharing via social media. How can one heal from a breakup if an ex-love still appears on Instagram and Facebook? How do we create boundaries in a time when “too much information” has become de rigueur? It takes mere seconds to upload an image to Instagram or Facebook, yet hours to recreate the same image in paint and thread. If we took a moment to reflect before posting some of our images, would our social and intimate lives be different?"
