About the Item
Salvadoran, born 1971
J. Oscar Molina is a painter and sculptor as well as Founder of Oscar Molina Gallery in Southampton, NY. He is most well-known for his “Children of the World” series which is comprised of large and small-scale sculptures as well as abstract paintings. The works in this series are inspired by and emanate from the artist’s vivid memories of his treacherous journey through the desert as a 16-year old escaping the violence of then war-torn El Salvador in the hopes of finding safe haven in the United States.
Newly arrived in the US, the ever-industrious Molina worked in landscaping and undertook studies in architecture, landscape design and drafting. Over the years, the artist built a highly successful stone masonry business based in Southampton, NY, yet, from the very beginning of his new life, Molina spent his free time sculpting. He went on to attend formal art classes and began painting, at first in oils and later moving into acrylics. By the age of 30, Molina had decided to focus his time and energy on his first love and his true passion, making art.
In 2015, the artist was invited to participate in “National Letters and Colors”, an exhibition at the National Museum of Anthropology in El Salvador. Molina has also exhibited at Casa de la Cultura in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and Casa de la Cultura in Marinilla, Columbia as well as at numerous venues in the US, including the Southampton Arts Center. At Oscar Molina Gallery, the artist exhibits his own work as well as painting, sculpture, mixed media and photography from around the world with an emphasis on work by artists from the Americas.
