About the Item
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY
"Measuring Blue" is a mixed media 3-dimensional collage with creatively hand-made oversized objects of a school ruler, dominos, and matches. These objects were hand crafted by the artist, James Smith. Included in the artwork are waxed thread and brown paper. All are mounted into an interestingly complex and intriguing structure on canvas board and framed. Many of John Smith's pieces are large constructions and tend to be viewed at a distance. This piece draws the viewer much closer for a more in-depth look placing one in an intimate relationship with the individual objects themselves.
James M. Smith is a native of St. Louis, Missouri and received his BFA from Kansas University in painting and printmaking and his MFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in painting and printmaking. He has taught at universities in the United States and Canada. His work has been exhibited regularly since 1973 and has won numerous awards. Smith’s work is represented in many museums and in both corporate and private collections.
Artist Arthur Osver called Smith both an inspired painter and savvy Alchemist.
“For him, anything and everything can lend itself to the magic of everyday living: paper, cloth, metal, wood or whatever, undergo a transmutation into images and objects of vivid power and resonance. Their impact on us is to change forever the way we now see the world.”
His Academic Awards include the 1970 Ada Bechtel Heuser Grant for Painting, University of Kansas, the 1971 Lockwood Grant Foundation for Painting, University of Kansas, the 1972 Reserve Grant for Painting, University of Illinois, and the 1978 Ford Foundation Summer Research Fellowship, New York, NY.
His work is collected by numerous museums and corporate collections in the mid-west.

- "Muse of Confidence", Encaustic, Oil, and Paper on WoodLocated in Detroit, MICelebrating our common colors as well as our diversity is Linden Godlove’s latest series of encaustics, “The Muses.” The paintings are modeled after icons, with a direct gaze that hearkens a response to their spirit, to find company in their character. This particular piece is the "Muse of Confidence" and is part of a set of nine that are sold separately from one another. Encaustic painting is an ancient art form (some early icons are encaustic), where hot wax is mixed with pigment and resin, and painted while liquid. Throughout the process, everything is repeatedly fused with fire and sometimes things melt in an unintended direction. Linden’s process involves repeatedly carving parts out and filling them back in, so the works are splayed out in a loose application of hot liquid, then cut back, then washed over with brushes of hot wax again. It’s a combination of chaos and control. The series draws inspiration from women all over the globe, as originally photographed by Mihaela Noroc for her book The Atlas of Beauty. A portion of the proceeds from these sales will go towards her project. While internationally influenced, the pieces were painted, scraped, and carved at the artist’s hundred year old Detroit...Category
