About the Item
Matis Zapoteco by Javier Vicente
Handwoven Zapotec Wool Rug
62" x 31"
Javier grew up in the town of Teotitlán in the state of Oaxaca, the son and grandson of a family of weavers. In the mid-nineties, when the economic problems and peso devaluation in Mexico caused very hard times all over the country, Javier left home alone and headed to the United States to earn money for his family. He knew no one there. He was fifteen years old.
After making his way to Orange County, California, he found a job washing dishes in a restaurant, living on the bare minimum so he could send money home to Oaxaca every week. He worked at that same restaurant for ten years. Ready for a change, he packed up and moved to Oregon, where he lived and worked seven years more.
Then he had an epiphany. He realized that he wanted to do what he'd been trained to do since age five, to go home to his family and become a weaver in the treasured Oaxacan tradition.
Before long, Javier's original designs, worked in wool with all natural dyes, earned him the designation Master Weaver. Now, he spends six months a year working in Bucerias, and the other six at home in Teotitlán.

- I Came to Where the Lone Pilgrim Lay, River Landscape Oil on Canvas, Western ArtBy Michael Ome UntiedtLocated in Whitefish, MTI Came to Where the Lone Pilgrim Lay by Michael Ome Untiedt Oil on Canvas, 36" x 48", 43" x 55" (framed), hanging hardware included. From the artist: "In Memory of Tom Horn: This is another of my feeble attempts to break down, to rage against the tyranny of time. I have fought this battle for a half century, yet my limbs grow slower, my hair more moon-bleached. I ponder as I apply brush strokes to the canvas, what thoughts pass through the viewer of this work a hundred years hence, two hundred years later? Will they know what I carry in my heart today? Am I on a great mandala of life, and will I return one day to this same experience, or am I adrift on a great "river" flowing endlessly through the Cosmos, heeding shoal water and seeking shoreline that is forever changing? A dear friend passed this week from the plague scourging our fair land. When and where will I hear his sweet self deprecating laughter again?" Born and raised in rural southeastern Colorado, Michael Ome Untiedt maintains a studio in Denver. Traveling extensively, he is known as a painter of the world who sees with a westerner’s eye. Through the color, brush strokes, and symbolic subject matter of his paintings, he attempts to examine the human predicament and its connections to the landscape and history of the American West. He is driven to portray twenty-first-century psychology on a nineteenth-century saddle! Untiedt has participated in numerous shows including the Western Masters Art Show and Sale, Settler’s West Miniatures Show and Art of the American West...Category

- Many Horse Shield Original Kevin Red Star Acrylic Crow Native American WesternBy Kevin Red StarLocated in Whitefish, MT"Many Horse Shield" by Kevin Red Star. Original Acrylic painting on Canvas, 48" x 30", 51" x 33" (framed). Crows were known for their exceptionally well-trained horses; each having specific skills i.e. hunting, warring, parade, and working with women and children, or moving camp. Kevin Red Star’s art is honored throughout Native America for its authenticity. It presents a shining vision of centuries-old Crow (Apsaalooka) culture through the eyes of a thoroughly contemporary consciousness. In the world of museums and private collections, he is equally respected for the content of his unique imagery, for his artistic productivity, and for the enduring value of his work. Kevin Red Star grew up on the Crow reservation in southern Montana, a member of a highly creative family. He was known as the go-to artist for all school projects. He was chosen to be in the first group of students at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe in the late sixties, when the founders personally visited Native villages and reservations nationwide and recruited the most talented youngsters from each. The school provided a learning environment of tribal tradition, world art history, and current trends. Open studios, well stocked with supplies, encouraged individual experimentation and collaboration. Students mined their ancient customs for content, and then created exciting new forms to provide current relevance. Red Star and some of his friends in their graduating class continued their studies at the San Francisco Art Institute before embarking on their careers. They attracted immediate notice in New York and Paris, as well as established art centers throughout the United States. And they went on to change the face of modern Indian art...Category
