Jessica Maffia
Untitled 9, Paper Collage, Female Swimmer Figure in Brown on Teal Green

2020

About the Item

In this hand-cut paper collage on paper, light brown paper is cut to form the silhouette of a delicately outlined female figure with arms gracefully posed while swimming, a darker shade of brown on her lower half suggesting shoulder-deep water, against a background of light teal green paper. Signed on verso Jessica Maffia is a visual artist born and raised in New York City. She works across a wide variety of media to celebrate the familiar and honor the natural world of the city, through repetitive, meditative processes. Her work has been exhibited throughout the US. She created the artwork for musician Childish Gambino’s two singles “Summertime Magic” and “Feels Like Summer.” Maffia is the recipient of numerous artist residency fellowships including at the Albee Foundation and the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, as well as two grants from the Hells Kitchen Foundation. Her work is featured on the covers of Fabio Gironi's philosophy book “Naturalizing Badiou: Mathematical Ontology and Structural Realism” and poet Firas Sulaiman’s latest book “As if My Name is a Mistaken Sign.” She is currently exhibiting an artist-made birdhouse at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, completed a mural for the non-profit Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation, and is in the design phase of a NYC Percent for Art permanent installation for a new school.
