DIMENSIONS: 71 X 71 X 2 inches // mixed media on canvas 72 X 72 X 2 inches framed // dark wooden floater frame JOSÉ GONÇALVES Born 1963 in Sao Paulo, Brazil Bachelor of Arts, Architecture and Urbanism, University Estadual de Lodrina (1987) Lives and works in Rhine Valley, Brazil ARTIST’S STATEMENT [Translated to English from Portuguese]: There is always a great deal of curiosity about the artist’s creative process, and how he re-organizes the world into a painting full of messages. Explaining this creation is like cracking the sacred code of existence. My paintings are the portrait of my world, a world I share with people at exactly the moment in which I materialize my dreams in paints, colours, volumes, and techniques ruled by my intuition. When I paint, I decipher my life and display it so that the viewer shares with me the pleasure of being alive; pulsating in scenes embedded with optimism. My work embodies a space I call “OUTRO TIEMPO”, which translates to “Another Time.” The OUTRO TEMPO is my surreal time, materialized. It is the time that does not pass and which, nevertheless, is concurrent to each moment. It is my view as a grown man over my boyhood dreams; it is my history told by paint-brushes and seen with the viewer’s eyes by which I am observed. My dreams exist just because I paint. In each painting a portion of them comes true, fills up people’s eyes and takes them my joy, my hope, and my thoughts. As companions for many days in my studio, the paintings now turn to lie in a different way. They spread their wings and fill with hope other walls; taking with them my truths, my romantic world, and my everyday-life colours . OUTRO TEMPO may also be considered as the first and second planes of the picture: the divine planes that give varied dimensions and perspective to human creation. It is the new looking old. It is the old looking young. It is the best of my family album. It is a classic scene with pop-art colours, it is all that is within my self…. and may be yours. OUTRO TEMPO is my freedom experienced by restless characters , in a very colourful black and white. It is my hidden seduction, ready to capture other worlds, reaffirming that life can be whatever we choose." - José Gonçalves
