About the Item

Exhibited at public gallery Saatchi London, February 2018 as part of the Transfiguration Exhibition. The bowl is mounted on a brass ring stand to allow light to pass through the leather giving it an ethereal and ancient quality. The colour in fish skin leather actually improves when exposed to UV, unlike other textiles. Furre is both sculptor and metalsmith, her chosen material being fish leather which she herself creates using a technique particular to the Arctic circle. Hers is a complete process-led practice from locally sourcing fish and tanning their skins with sustainable materials such as willow bark and natural soap, making pliable, sweet-scented leathers, to fashioning objects of exquisite and translucent beauty crowned with delicate metalwork. Her practice naturally evolved from her background: her connection to Nordic heritage coming through her Norwegian father, her time studying tanning in Sweden and Iceland, and her work as a highly regarded sculptor in the museum and heritage world at the Jorvik Viking Centre in York and the Glacier Museum in Norway among many others. Furre’s time flows between her passion for distance wild swimming and her leather sculpting which lend a natural flow to her year, swimming in the warmer months, tanning in the colder. It is clear that she finds a meditative quality to both, a deep connection to the cycle and sustainability of nature through water and the life it gives. Her objects convey a deep reverence and sense of the magnificence and preciousness of nature. They speak of mankind’s relationship with the natural environment, referencing the past with their relic-like form, the present in the power of connecting with nature’s elements, and the future in the delicate relationship hanging in the balance between man and environment. Regarding her work, the viewer is presented with an object of sacred quality, as though out of antiquity, and discovers a raw material transfigured to an object of reverential, considered beauty.
