About the Item

Kim Dong Hyung Equilibrium2020 Hanji( Korean traditional paper ) and mixed media on canvas 2023 Exhibition at Vivian Choi Gallery Kim Dong Hyung reinterprets and expands the images accumulated on the walls of buildings with traces of time through cracks or rusty phenomena left on the walls of old buildings, and the artist's thoughts on the relationship between nature and artificiality. Kim Dong Hyung, who came into contact with construction sites as a child under the influence of his father who worked in architecture, pays attention to the drawings of the exterior and interior walls of buildings and captures the imagery in his works. Kim first creates texture on the canvas by using artificial construction materials such as acrylic filler. Then, he covers the texture with the natural material, Hanji, the Korean paper to neutralize the rough texture, and repeats the line drawing or adds several layers of color on top. Finally, Kim repeats the practice of erasing all the processes of the work with white paint, and the act of erasing the already painted picture again paradoxically becomes a process of completing the work by covering the process of enduring work creation with white color. The contradictory method of drawing and erasing the work represents the fundamental logic of Kim Dong Hyung's works. Through the traces of architectural walls, which have been worn and dismantled with the passage of time, leaving only texture and physical properties, Kim visually expresses the process of human artificial efforts adapting to the laws of nature. One of the striking elements in Kim Dong Hyung’s work is the ambiguous color that cannot be clearly defined. Kim Dong Hyung who majored in oriental painting, expresses the blank space, a representative characteristic of oriental painting, through the act of erasing. The ambiguous and neutral colors created by repeating the process of painting and erasing leave an afterimage and resonance. The duality of concealing yet revealing, and the whiteness of emptying yet fully filling, reminds us of a cyclical life in which all the passed processes return to the starting point, and unfolds a cosmic perspective of material, spirit, and oriental philosophy. Kim Dong Hyung graduated from the Department of Oriental Painting at Hongik University and the Department of Oriental Painting at Dankook University. Kim has exhibited at leading art museums and galleries in Korea, including solo exhibitions at the Oullim Art Museum in Goyang, Ullimnuri, and group exhibitions at the Gangneung Museum of Art. who won the ‘Gyeomjae Artist of Tomorrow Award’ from the Gyeomjae Jeongseon Museum of Art in 2022.

His oeuvre reflects his Taoist belief that the artist must balance material and nature in the unified act of making in order to reach harmony. Dansaekhwa, which remains a driving force in Korean contemporary art, has gained international recognition over the past few years. Although the Korean monochrome...
