Kris Haas
Worn & Torn #17, Abstract Painting

2021

About the Item

Artist Comments
Dynamic gestural strokes in black swish and splatter above blocks of yellow and grey in this expressive abstract by artist Kris Haas. Drips of black form subtle shadows with markings and scratches that leave texture on its surface. Part of Kris' derivative and ongoing Disjointed Reality series. Her work is rooted in a primal understanding that at any form, shape, or object, whether worn or torn or even due to life's circumstances, there is still beauty coming through. So you will find bits of wear & tear on the painting itself.

About the Artist
Artist Kris Haas creates expressive mixed-media abstracts on paper where she relies on intuition when combining blocks of color with free-form shapes. “I think it is important to give the color space to breathe in order to be understood and seen,” says Kris. After her accident in February of 2004 which left her with a permanent brain injury disability, Kris found herself relying on her visual language. Her process starts with selecting the right image, one that will stand out and call to her, images and gestures that create different feelings and a different atmospheric approach. From there, she decides where the color blocks need to go. Notably, one of Kris’ works was in the permanent set of the hit series Mad Men, featured in one of the offices in the last two seasons. Kris is constantly creating and needs her studio clean and organized. “The tabletop does get messy though and it gets a daily organizational cleaning, otherwise I wouldn't be able to work!”

  • Giselle, Original Painting
    By Ryan Pickart
    Located in San Francisco, CA

    Artist Comments
Part of Ryan's long-running series of portraits done in charcoal and oil paint on gold washed paper. Ryan enjoys pairing the fluidity and transparency of oil paint with the substance of charcoal. "Much like the ballet of the same name, "Giselle" combines dramatic patterns with stoic expression," says Ryan. The figure wears an abstract dress of dripping circles, her hair in modernist angles. She looks intensely at the viewer, her slender frame elongated by her strong pose.
