Linling Lu
One Hundred Melodies of Solitude No.179

2019

About the Item

Series: One Hundred Melodies of Solitude Acrylic on Canvas 77" x 77" x 2" Linling Lu is best known for her hard-edge, circular abstract paintings with concentric rings of color. Her human-scale paintings have been described as inducing states of meditation. Lu’s work also includes sculptures of interlocking wood blocks, shaped paintings, and sewn fabric collages. Her abstractions have been compared to the Washington Color School painters such as Kenneth Noland. Linling Lu’s large-scale painting compositions are included in Fields and Formations, A Survey of Mid-Atlantic Abstraction, curated by Kristen Hileman. The 12-artist group exhibition recently traveled from The Delaware Contemporary Museum to American University Museum and remains open through May 22, 2022. Linling Lu: Musical Meditations, a solo show (Feb19-June 5,2022) opened at Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, the area's premier destination for fine art, contains a series of paintings created from 2019 to the present, many of which were composed during the two years of the ongoing pandemic. Lu views these works as a means of “healing from the chaos and uncertainty of life.” Lu’s large, circular canvases pulsate with color and invite viewers to reflect on their memories and connections with music. Lu’s work was included in public and private collections nationally and internationally such asMicrosoftArt Collection, Capital One headquarters, CityCenter DC, Hall Arts Hotel, and the permanent collection of the Embassy of The United States of America in Beijing among a group of artists including Cai Guo-Qiang, Maya Lin, Betty Woodman, Xu Bing, Jeff Koons, and Fred Tomaselli. Linling Lu earned a BFA in painting from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 2008 and an MFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting, MICA in 2011 with honor. The artist currently lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland.

Having started my career by painting Rembrandt-like portraits of luminous white roses, I credit my discovery of fractals for transforming my artistic vision, and changing the direction and force of my work. Always working with a single image of a flower, or a component thereof, I have stripped away the mask of the exterior form and magnified the interior thousands of times to depths beyond what is visible to the naked eye. My subject is no longer simply a flower; it is a dynamical system existing in a chaotic universe filled with energy, turbulence, mystery and beauty. Additionally, I have discovered that the system repeats itself through multiple phenomena. This is where I have taken the literal definition of fractals, and put my creative voice to the principles. Though the non-representational work may suggest a natural likeness - a wing, a wave, a shell, or even a human form - my vision invites a fresh dialogue between aesthetics and science. Whether creating evocative representational images or boldly deceptive non-objective work, my focus is always on the choreography of the movement, the organization of the space, the subtlety in the tonal transitions, and the intricacy of the brushwork. Exclusively painting...
