About

Glowing in jewel-like tones inspired by Notre Dame’s Rose Window, this unique piece by Mauro Perucchetti is exquisitely detailed and crafted. It comprises 6,212 individual Jelly Babies, ranging in colour from lime green to deep blue. The Jelly Babies emanate a kaleidoscopic glow, intensified by an intricate lighting system that sits behind the work. Crystal-clear and evenly finished, they are cast with Perucchetti’s pioneering resin technique, a notoriously volatile liquid that he has spent many years manipulating. The work recreates Notre Dame’s iconic Rose Window in the idioms of Pop Art and Minimalism. Bright and high-tech, it seems poised between the synthetic and ethereal. Perucchetti conceived of the work on a visit to Paris. Walking through Île de la Cité, he was struck by the masses of people who had come to marvel at the cathedral. Hailing from different countries and religious backgrounds, they exemplified an ideal of multiculturalism that he sought to embody in his work. Appearing in eleven different colours, the Jelly Babies are arranged after the Rose Window’s intricate and harmonious mosaic. Each Jelly Baby was cast individually, a meticulous process that took six months to complete.
