About the artwork
Mohamed Arejdal explores another series of works, entitled 'Lawhat', based on wooden planks that refer directly to the Koranic tablet. This series was born out of a painful childhood experience for the artist. At his Koranic school, he witnessed the fquih (schoolmaster) mercilessly beating a deaf-mute child who was unable to interact with a teaching method characterised by rigidity, violence and blindness. This atrocious and inhuman scene left an indelible mark on him, one that resurfaces in this series, where we see an explosion of tablets that contain no Koranic scripture, but which are themselves transformed into sculptural writing.
The irregularly-shaped tablets are bound together by brass wires. Here, however, the binding does not offer any regular work that could be likened to a notebook or a book to be read. Instead, we are dealing with structures with organic forms that unfold in space and whose curves, hollows and bends are reminiscent of an animal gathering, perhaps of dromedaries. A close look at these boards reveals that, although they are devoid of writing, they are not totally uniform surfaces. A close look at these planks reveals that, although they are devoid of writing, they are not totally uniform surfaces. In fact, the layer of greyish clay (slasal) that covers them is enlivened by oil-like stains whose translucence reveals the raw wood. This is the fatty substance released by the cedar wood, which the artist consciously uses before it is completely dry, in order to achieve precisely this kind of material effect. This attachment to the organic and the living permeates the whole of Mohamed Arejdal's work, in terms of both the forms and the materials he usually uses.
More
Made from raw organic materials with no added colour, such as stone, bone, wool, earth, metal, wood, etc., and based on a plastic vocabulary that abhors geometry and symmetry, industry and standardised products, a vocabulary that uses repetitive devices at will, Mohamed Arejdal's creative activity is constantly irregular and simple, a creative gesture that requires no particular know-how and is open to everyone. It's a creative activity that never ceases to invent its own forms in order to articulate a very specific semantic field, one intimately linked to the artist's own life and to that shared by the nomadic populations whose values, traces and memory he seeks to perpetuate.

- "CUBE, PYRAMID & SPHERE", sculpture, clay, abstract, geometric, installationBy Harold WortsmanLocated in Toronto, OntarioCUBE, PYRAMID & SPHERE is a major work created over a five-year period. It is a variable installation, composed of 4 geometric sculptures of high-fired clay pigmented with oxides, a block of wood found in the ocean, river gravel, limestone, and slate shattered to fragments. Note the surface textures, the ground of natural stone, the colors black, umber, copper and tan throughout, the pattern of slate fragments. CUBE, PYRAMID & SPHERE is characteristic of Wortman's practice – warm, contemporary, uniquely crafted, yet speaks to ancient, primitive traditions of art-making that cross cultures and histories. Highly attuned to the art of Africa, the Middle East, India and Asia, his forms are organic abstracts with masculine and feminine attributes that resonate together as a pleasing enigma. They make sense immediately, yet never give up all their secrets. CUBE, PYRAMID & SPHERE was exhibited at BASE: Immersive Art Experiences, Industry City, Brooklyn, NY, 2017. It was also reproduced in Tussle Magazine, alongside "An Interview with Harold Wortsman...Category
