About the Item

Sphere of Live, #2238 by Natasha Zupan Mixed-media collage Dimensions: 21.25 in. H x 17.32 in. W One of a kind Signed lower right on recto by the artist 2018 _____________________________________ Natasha Zupan's body of work, 'Homage to Horst P. Horst', explores the manipulation of surface texture, light, and the interweaving of time. She has incorporated found images in books from Horst P. Horst into her collages. Time past and time future are united in a perpetual possibility of change. She tries to capture the resonances of evolution in various types of representation. It is not about translating a world that already exists, but about an entrance into a different universe. A timeless, tactile world of sensation and overlapping memory. Materials and emotions converge: The surface holds synthetic binders consisting mainly of layers of inks, acrylics, watercolors, pigments, photographs from books and digital images. These are imbued with altered states of feelings and archetypal references. Combining Renaissance hues and chiaroscuro with modern collage and media, Natasha Zupan beautifully unites the old and new. A Yale-educated, internationally renowned artist, Natasha combines the innovation of her highly crafted technique with her wonder for tradition and the great Masters. Her clear, bright brush strokes and play of light and shadow are both rhythmic and youthful. The female figures in her paintings have an undeniable renaissance quality about them. Their classical faces become nymph-like when accentuated with symbols of nature and beauty. Each figurative work harbors a unique and intricate personality. Powerfully expressive, they are at once pure and sensual, innocent yet beguiling. In 2006, Natasha collaborated with premier fashion designer Zang Toi to create the set for his highly anticipated event at Manhattan’s fashion week. An internationally acclaimed figure in the art world, Natasha shows annually throughout Europe, Asia and the United States, including multiple exhibitions at the Columbus Museum of Art, Georgia.

He grew up writing poetry, essays and literary prose. In the 1960s, he was active in the Second Russian Avant-garde movement in the Soviet Union. In 1971, he immigrated to Israel. In 1975, he established the Leviathan school together with Avraham Ofek and Shmuel Ackerman, seeking to combine symbolism, metaphysics and Judaism in an all-inclusive “national style.” Grobman’s lithograph work employs images and symbols from Jewish mysticism and Kabbalah. His paintings incorporate texts in Russian and Hebrew. In addition to his artistic endeavors, he writes about art and aesthetics. The group combined conceptual art and "land art" with Jewish symbolism. Of the three of them Avraham Ofek had the deepest interest in sculpture and its relationship to religious symbolism and images. In one series of his works Ofek used mirrors to project Hebrew letters, words with religious or cabbalistic significance, and other images onto soil or man-made structures. In his work "Letters of Light" (1979), for example, the letters were projected onto people and fabrics and the soil of the Judean Desert. In another work Ofek screened the words "America", "Africa", and "Green card" on the walls of the Tel Hai courtyard during a symposium on sculpture Part of the generation of emigre Russian artists, many Jewish, that included Yuri Kuper, Komar and Melamid, Eduard Steinberg, Erik Bulatov, Viktor Pivovarov, Vladimir Yankilevsky, Ilya Kabakov and Grisha Bruskin.
