About the Item

This mixed media piece is a wall-hanging tapestry with violet, red, orange, yellow, and green. Various textured fabrics hang loosely. About this piece: "No matter how opaque the fabric of the dress onto is, there will always be a layer underneath it. I have worn leggings and tank tops underneath the dress because 'it is too hot to wear this shiny sticky layer'. My mother and sisters disapprove because the layer underneath the dress should shine through. This layering informs me my modus operandi. Layers both of information and history. Its history is suppressed in different regions, and it also varies depending on the region, like the different dialects of the Kurdish language. Now that I am older, I understand why we wear the Kurdish dress to rallies when protesting. The Kurdish dress is both a song o flounce and protest for our occupiers. A recent example of the dress being suppressed in the region was April 15th, 2013, when policemen in Marivan, Iran convicted a 25-year-old man named Tawfik Dabash of 'disturbing public order', the Global Nonviolent Action Database stated that they paraded him around the city in handcuffs wearing traditional Kurdish women's clothes as a form o public criminal punishment. Later hundreds of Kurdish women in the city organized a march condemning the punishment. Protestors were attacked and injured for wearing the traditional Kurdish clothes at the march. This case spread rapidly on social media when two Kurdish men from the city of Marivan started a Facebook page called 'Kurd Men for Equality.' Kurdish men all over the world began posting photos of themselves wearing the traditional Kurdish dress as a symbol of solidarity and this reached multiple news outlets. According got database, within one month after the Facebook page was established the 'Islamic Republic Police Chief' issued an apology to all Kurdish women and announced that the officers responsible for carrying out the punishment were fired, affirming that the situation would not happen again. Two other criminals were slated to soon face similar punishment, though it was cancelled at this time." -Nuveen Barwari Exhibition Statement: Gul-Barîn, the state of being showered with flowers, is Nuveen Barwari's first solo exhibition at The Red Arrow Gallery in Nashville, TN. Instead of focusing on what is often lost through translation, Barwari sifts through the different shapes and symbols that are found when one is living between clashing cultures, languages, and materials. Barwari's expansive studio practice involves gathering and repurposing artifacts from her community such as worn Kurdish clothes, fabric, and used rugs to investigate the politics of display, painting, fashion, and borders. Barwari paints, cuts, screen prints, and sews on these materials to create discrete objects and larger immersive installations fo reflect and explore conditions of assimilation, colonial amnesia, and the fragmented state of diaspora living. There is a sense of history, place, and loss in the way elements of the body are presented in Barwari's work. The use and reuse of textiles evoke how they might have looked on a person, how they would have danced or even moved in them. Barwari draws on a wide range of influences from Kurdish literature and dance to U.S. commodity culture, the mise-en-scéne of West Asian bazaars, and geopolitical issues. Gul Barîn is an attempt at locating the space between a love song and a protest song. Artist Bio: Nuveen Barwari received a Bachelor of Science in Studio Art from Tennessee State University in 2019 and is a 2022 MFA candidate at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Barwari has worked with and completed projects with the Frist Art Museum, Oasis Center's Art and Activism Series, Coop Gallery, and McGruder Social Practice Artist Residency. She has exhibited in numerous locations such as Kurdistan's first Fashion Week (2018) in Erbil, Kurdistan region of Iraq, the Frist Art Museum (2019) in Nashville, TN, The University of Michigan (2019), Sugar Gallery (2019) in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Zg Gallery (2020) in Chicago, 21c Museum Hotel (2021) in Nashville, Tennessee, NGBK Gallery (2021) in Berlin, Germany, and Duhok Gallery (2021) in Duhok, Kurdistan. Barwari is represented by The Red Arrow Gallery in Nashville, TN.
