On Hansen
The Glory of a Dream

2023

About the Item

"The Glory of a Dream" is one of the 14 pieces that make up "Spectrum's End," the latest artwork by artist On Hansen. "The Glory of a Dream" consists of 10 pigment print editions on archival paper, but it should be noted that each of these editions has been individually painted by the artist, who has created abstract wings using oil pastels, making each of the 10 editions unique. Spectrum's End is a multimedia project that explores the concepts of artistic endurance and infrathin through the remastering and re-editing of an anonymous 1950s rodeo film and footage from the 1950s of Michelangelo's works. The main footage, originally intended as a mere documentation of the rodeo, has been transformed by artist On Hansen into a new piece of art. By applying a unique blend of music, texture, and visual effects, Hansen has successfully re-contextualized the film, revealing new perspectives on beauty and drama. The result is a piece of work that transcends the limits of its original purpose. One of the most striking aspects of Spectrum's End is Hansen's ability to explore the concept of artistic endurance. Despite the fact that the original filmmaker is unknown, the work continues to exist, to be discovered and rediscovered, and to be transformed by new artists like Hansen. This highlights the idea that art, once created, is capable of surviving beyond its creators, and that it can be shaped and reshaped over time, taking on new meanings and interpretations. Another noteworthy feature of Spectrum's End is Hansen's skill in exploring the nature of beauty. By descontextualizing the footage of the rodeo, Hansen reveals the drama, power, and elegance of the riders and their horses. He also examines the beauty and the subtle nuances of light and shadow, which add depth and texture to the visuals. In addition to the video, Hansen has also transformed select frames into standalone works of art, thereby expanding the project beyond the realm of film. In any film, there are frames that go unnoticed or remain barely perceptible, becoming part of the "infrathin," pushing the boundaries of perception. Fleeting moments, subtle details, and visual elements may reside within a frame, yet easily elude detection during a typical viewing due to their brevity or lack of prominence. These imperceptible components possess the power to impact the visual experience, adding layers of meaning and depth when extracted from their original context, rescuing them from the realm of the infrathin. On Hansen rescues some of these moments of exquisite beauty to transform them into different works that compose Spectrum's end. Overall, Spectrum's End invites viewers to consider the role of the artist in shaping our perceptions of the world, and it highlights the potential of everyday events to become works of art.
