About the Item
The intricate retablos of Chicago-based artist Patrick Fitzgerald are his means of paying homage to those who have inspired him throughout his life. Derived from Mexican votive painting, his retablos are offerings to the beloved people and places that dwell in his memory and imagination. Its creation in itself an act of devotion, each retablo is a three-dimensional collage layered with spontaneous decisions and nostalgic references.
Entitled “Retablo No. 6 (Birdland: I am the Bowerbird),” this latest retablo from Patrick Fitzgerald is a personal reflection on home, connection and the accumulated references that comprise one's identity. The jumbled vignette is inspired by the bowerbird, an Australian bird known for its unique courtship behaviors. To attract a mate, the male bowerbird builds a shelter of grass and branches, known as a bower, and decorates his sculpted hideaway with eye-catching objects gathered from the landscape.
Taking cues from this feathered collector, Fitzgerald created a bower of his own, a retablo that bares his identity through collected ephemera and accumulated memories. Set within an old window frame, the retablo peers outwards from within Fitzgerald's home - the upper half collaged with the world around him (Chicago homes and yellowed newspaper) and the lower with fragments of himself (favorite records and tokens of his day-to-day.) A veil of twigs likens this collage of memories to the bowerbird's treasure trove, drawing a soulful connection to a kindred spirit from a world apart.

The sculptures and paintings of Chicago-based artist Patrick Fitzgerald are about personal nostalgia, memory, and the beauty he finds in his urban environment. He refers to his body of work as his “Neighborhood of Infinity,” a borrowed term used literally to describe the bounty of materials and creative inspiration he found in the industrial landscapes of his youth. For the last decade, Fitzgerald has been mining his early experiences, re-envisioning the mechanical world of his childhood through the eye of an artist. Born from a fascination with the soap box derby cars of his youth, Fitzgerald constructs miniature soap box cars and the branded attire of their imagined drivers. He builds primarily with found materials - wood, wires, tubing, screen, fabric and collage. The real work involves the finishes: the hand lettering, stages of varying color paint coats, and surface treatments. He always leaves traces of changes or repairs made to a work, adding to the history and evolution of each piece. Futuristic forms imbued with history, each sculpture is an exercise in imagining the future through the lens of the past – or vice versa.
