About the Item
Phillip Sage is a master printmaker and artist whose work has been sought after by galleries and collectors of fine art from around the world for the last four decades. Born in Manchester, NH, he became an entrepreneur at the age of 8. His formal education includes a BA in Economics and Business Administration from St. Anselm’s College as well as a BFA from Cooper Union in Graphic Design. At Cooper Union he studied under his mentor, Charles Klabunde, as well as photography with Michael A. Vaccaro. He completed his military obligation by becoming an officer in the US Coast Guard stationed in New Orleans. During this time he came to know and love the beauty of southern living and its gracious people. In 1971 he began his career as a printmaker and painter. Southern Louisiana has been his home and artistic inspiration throughout his prominent career. Mr. Sage works exclusively with copper plates using an antique English press. His limited edition prints are printed on the finest paper with the effort done entirely by hand in the tradition of master intaglio printmakers. His artwork richly portrays the traditions of the South and the history of New Orleans. His etchings, when viewed by native and tourist alike invoke a feeling of romantic nostalgia. His extraordinary talent and determination has recently brought him a Peoples Health Champion’s Award as an individual over the age of 65 who has made a notable achievement in art conservation, specifically, removing mold from fine art etchings printed on even the most fragile types of paper. While not riding an Arabian horse or playing polo, Mr. Sage remains active in the art world. He donates his artwork for many charitable causes and participates in group exhibitions and solo-shows thus enabling him to meet his collectors. He is represented by numerous galleries in the South, continues his work in conservation and occasionally takes commissions for paintings in oil or watercolor.

- Lexicon (Large)By Guy LymanLocated in New Orleans, LAArtist's Statement: "This painting harkens back to a series called "Gridish" that I created over the past couple of years, comprising similar rectangular shapes with complex surfaces incorporating tar, house paint, enamel safety paint and other materials. Here, though, the forms are isolated in negative space rather than stacked in a grid, which gives them a more iconic quality." “Lyman’s work evolves restlessly, with the common elements generally being deft and unusual color choices that balance assonance and dissonance, and vestiges of the hand and facture purposely left in the paintings. The negative space is often so meticulously worked that it’s almost as if the objects – usually simple shapes – are there as much to complement the background as vice versa. Despite the often bold colors there is an elegance about his paintings that prevents them from being either loud or decorative. " Artbeit Zeitschrift “His paintings are a refreshing departure from the current abstract art world’s seemingly endless parade of fields of color with scribbles providing form, a style that is easily mimicked and has become a sort of “safe,” accessible go-to. There are confident decisions in these paintings appearing as commitments of strongly delineated forms and unexpected collisions of color that give the work a visceral, confident and playful soul, increasingly missing from contemporary expressionist abstraction. They are the paintings of a real painter rather than a decorative artist.” ArtSeen, 2018 (from a collector): "Love your work. We collect colorists like Wolf Kahn and Jennifer Bartlett, whom I commissioned a piece from that is in the entrance of Mayo Clinic. We are old fans...Category

$6,320 Sale Price20% Off - Checkmate, inscribed copper sheet, acrylic paint, asphaltum, ink, metal frameLocated in Toronto, OntarioCHECKMATE by Rocky Dobey is a hand-inscribed copper sheet with black ink, acrylic paint, and asphaltum. It is framed in aluminum and measures 108 x 48”. It features some of the artist’s notable motifs – the number 13-1/2 (refers to 12 jurors, 1 judge, half a chance), a monstrous tower of brick with crenelated towers, inlaid with eyes, hooked daggers and barred windows, clouds with lightening bolts, tongues of flame drifting down... Though the swirl of black cloud near the top of the tower also rewards our attention – the engraving here suggesting floral as well as cosmic patterns, biological patterns. Checkmate also contains more subtle mark-making and ritualized ornamentation, such as the wheat sheafs across the expanse of copper, names of people are inscribed in the borders of the tower, vertical hash marks counting off months or years in bundles of five. For over 40 years, outsider artist Rocky Dobey has been producing intaglio prints, etched metal plaques, engraved copper sheets and site-specific public sculptures. Working anonymously for the first two decades, his work has drawn attention to social and political issues like prison and justice reform, neighborhood gentrification, globalization, indigenous sovereignty, drug rehabilitation and homelessness. With striking imagery of demonic towers toppled in flames, horrific machines and cryptic symbols of oppression, Rocky's work soon became a recognized and sought-after stamp of organized resistance. Several of his prints are held in collections, particularly the “Carnival Against Capitalism” poster he produced for the 2001 Quebec City protests against the Free Trade Area of the Americas.
