Raymond Waters
Stimulus Package - cabinet, bottles, money, mixed media, wall sculpture

2009

About the Item

It’s an intriguing collection and it was created by Toronto born artist Raymond Waters. The multi-media visual artist creates artwork that explores the relationship between objects and American culture. Waters is particularly interested in the meaning of the term ‘value’ and uses recycled and found objects to create his pieces. This piece is one of nine unique versions all housed in a wood cabinet. With this collection of 20 glass bottles filled with burned, and shredded American bills, and coins he is provoking a conversation about the stimulus package developed in response to the Recession of 2008, the stimulus package was enacted by the 111-th U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama in February 2009. It was estimated to be $787 billion U.S. Dollars but was later revised to $831 billion U.S. Dollars. Raymond Waters was born in Toronto in 1965. A graduate of the Ontario College of Art, Communication and Design, he participated in an OCA Painting Scholarship Summer Program in NYC in 1989. Waters was awarded a grant from the Ontario Arts Council in 2017. He has held numerous solo exhibitions in Canada and the U.S. and completed many corporate commissions including Coca-Cola’s Head Office in Toronto. His work can be found in both corporate and private collections around the world.

  • Listening to Scarlatti in Red - bold, geometric, abstract, collage on paper
    By Francine Simonin
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
Vertical composition on paper with a saturated wine red ground over which bristle brushed lines are cross hatched in black and royal blue. Layered over these central marks is a structure of stacked, collaged geometric strips of paper painted with intersecting lines and shapes of marine blue, red and white. This work is unframed. Please ask us about framing options. Titled "listening to Scarlati" the piece may certainly be a response to the structured sonatas for harpsicord and pianoforte of Domenico Scarlatti, an Italian composer and contemporary of Bach and Handel. Scarlati spent much of his life at the service of the Portugese and Spanish royalty...

  • Listening to Scarlatti - bold, layered, abstract shapes, collage on paper
    By Francine Simonin
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
Vertical composition on paper with a canary yellow acrylic ground over which bristle brushed lines are cross hatched in black. Layered over these central marks is a central collaged strip of paper highlighted in ultra marine blue and grey topped by a tache of white paint. This is balanced by a horizontal strip in white and grey at the foot of the composition held down by another white swipe of white acrylic. A small horizontal collaged rectangle at the upper left keeps the eye moving upwards in the picture plane. This work is unframed. Please ask us about framing options. Titled "listening to Scarlatti", or en ecoutant Scarlatti in French, the piece may certainly be a response to the sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, an Italian composer and contemporary of Bach and Handel.
