Wonderful mixed media artwork of a female nude with arms in motion by Samuel Granovsky. Signed and dated 1925, Paris in india ink lower right. The figure is outlined in india ink and the rest of the artwork’s medium is watercolor. Condition is good. Presently unframed but newly professionally matted. Overall matted size is 22 by 27 inches. Samuel (Chaim) Granovsky was born in 1889 Yekaterinoslav (today Dnipro, Ukraine), in what was then the Russian Empire. He left his home town in order to study painting at the Art Academy in Odessa. He did not return to Odessa after his military service, but instead continued his studies in Munich in 1908/09. He went to Paris in 1910 and settled in Montparnasse, where he worked as a model at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In order to make a living, he also worked as a cleaner at Café La Rotonde. Granovsky regularly exhibited in the Salon des Indépendants, and from 1912 onwards in the Salon d’Automne. In the early 1920s he also joined the Cherez Group, which was closely linked to the Dadaists. During the Second World War, he remained in Paris, but was arrested in July 1942 during the “Rafle du Vélodrome d’Hiver”, a series of mass arrests of Jews. He was initially interned in Drancy but was then deported to Auschwitz on 22 July, where he was killed in 1942.

    Original early modernist india ink drawing with brushwork by the well known American artist, Adolf Arthur Dehn. Signed by the artist, titled and dated 1925 lower right. Dehn spent his early career traveling and working in Europe during the three year time period 1922 to 1925 when this drawing was done in France. The Chateau d’Auguebelette build in the fourteen century as a fort sits high on the mountain range to the left. Condition is very good. Light toning of paper consistent with age. Under glass, not examined out of frame. The artwork is housed in a antique style silver leaf contemporary frame 16.25 by 22 inches. Adolf Dehn, painter, printmaker, author, illustrator and teacher, was born Adolph Arthur Dehn in Waterville, Minnesota on November 22, 1895. He was valedictorian of his graduating class at Waterville High School and attended the Minneapolis School of Art between 1914 and 1917. Dehn studied for a year at the Art Students League in New York beginning in 1919. While in New York he met Boardman Robinson who introduced him to the master printer, George Miller. The first exhibition of Dehn's lithographs was held at the Weyhe Gallery in New York City in 1921 and the Weyhe Gallery mounted his first solo exhibition in 1923. Throughout is life Dehn was a frequent visitor to Europe, staying for various periods of time. Upon his return from a three-year stay in Europe in 1925, he changed the spelling of his first name to Adolf. In 1934, Dehn established the Adolf Dehn Print Club and was one of the founder-member artists of Associated American Artists in New York. He was selected by Prints magazine as one of the ten best printmakers in the United States in 1936 and the following year he worked in the graphic arts division of the Federal Art Project. He taught summers at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri (1938) and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (1940-1942). For his lithographs, Dehn worked with the finest printers including Meister Schulz in Berlin, Edmond Desjobert in Paris, and George Miller, Grant Arnold...

Presently unframed. The artwork was mounted by the artist onto Nelson show card board. Provenance: A Pennsylvania estate. Lloyd Raymond Ney was an American non-objective artist. Known as Bill Ney, he was born in Friedenburg, Pennsylvania March 8th, 1893, the son of William W. Ney and Sadie Maidenford. He studied at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. In 1918 he won a Cresson Fellowship to study in Europe. In the 1920's Ney traveled to France where he studied and painted in Paris among the vital European modernist community. He lived at the Hotel de Versailles, 60 Boulevard Montparnasse. During this period Ney created his major work, "The Drinkers," Later, the artist wrote extensively about the process of developing this work and the transforming experience of integrating the Modernist ideal he had witnessed in Paris. After returning to the United States, Ney settled in New Hope, PA, an established art community between New York and Philadelphia. Unlike more New Hope artists who followed impressionism in the early 20th century, Ney embraced a more expressive contemporary style including non-objective works. He was among a group of artist known as the "Independents," who challenged the traditional subject matter of regional artists. They formed a new exhibition group.
