About the Item

'Ruark', by Sunni Mercer is a sculptural mixed media wooden box measuring at 2 x 5.5 x 3.75 inches. Sunni uses found objects and photos in addition to the dark brown wooden box in her sculpture. There is a circular photo of a little girl which appears to be a vintage black and white photograph on the lid of the box. Her picture is bordered by a black, circular, chunky frame with about 50 different sized, bone shaped clay fragments that are a light brown/tan color. There are four small twisted wires on each side of the frame: top, bottom, left & right. This black frame and picture take up the majority of the lid, not quite touching each edge but close. The bronze metal latch on the lid is an elongated trapezoid, horizontally placed, with four small screws in the corners. Below the latch, on each side of the bottom corners, are two small circular indentions while directly below the latch is a silvery metal, vertically placed label, with the word 'RUARK' printed in blue and taped over. On the base of the box, on all four sides is a strip of what appears to be an old black and white school group photo of young children; the strip takes up close to half of the base of the box. The strip is made of the same photo reprinted again on all four sides, with only one child standing out of the black and white crowd, wearing a light blue shirt. When you open the box, the inside of the lid displays a small card with the message, "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine." The card is sewn in each corner as well as in the center of the top and bottom edge, with a light pink thread into a piece of soft, black felt that takes up the inside of the lid. The black fabric is bordered with the pink sewn thread, as well as the black felt that takes up the bottom of the box. Mercer's box alludes to the idea of boxes as holders of memories/keepsakes and important tools in the continuation of history and stories. Decorative boxes often hold photographs, papers, and keepsakes, and by creating a box that is configured with old photographs and found objects, Mercer exhibits a functional sculpture that relates to the common admiration for collecting meaningful objects. Sunni Mercer, MFA, NCIP Sunni Mercer is an NEA Regional Fellow with experience in studio art and interpretive design. 'Untitled Assemblage #S3-23', by John Wolfe, Mixed Media Abstract Sculpture
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
John Wolfe's Mixed Media Abstract Sculpture, "Untitled Assemblage #S 3-23" brings together wood, steel, ceramic elements, and acrylic paint. The warm colors of the wood and painted ceramic elements soften the feel of the rectilinear arrangement. The shallow depth of the work gives the sculpture a kind of "drawing" quality while the shadows it casts lend a more expansive feel. The heavy, dark wood base anchors all aspects of the work in place. This work is the perfect tabletop piece. It's large enough to command attention, but also subtle in its open framework arrangement. John Wolfe was born in Vernon...

'Danae, ' by ArmanH, Bronze Sculpture
By Arman Hambardzumyan
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
This 20.47" x 9.44" x 10.62" bronze sculpture by Armenian artist, Arman Hambardzumyan, was created in 2013 and depicts the tragedy of the Greek goddess Danae. The artist's interpretation of this classical Greek myth, where an oracle foretold Danae would bear a son who would kill her father, and in an attempt to evade this, Acrisius, her father, imprisoned her. The king of Gods - Zeus, desired Danae and came to her in the form of golden rain. The oracle came true, Danae conceived a son, Perseus, who killed Acrisius by accident. The expressive love between Danae and Zeus is imitated by the naked body of a woman and a golden shower on her body. "The image of a woman always inspires me in both physical and spiritual beauty. In this sculpture, I tried to express the image of a woman with her soul, which has no smell, taste and is not tangible. The contour of the beautiful shimmering body of a woman allows you to feel the presence of the female soul inside."--ArmanH Arman is an Armenian artist represented in several major collections around the world including the Terra Garden in Kikinda (Serbia), Contemporary Hall of the National Museum of Fine Arts (Chisinau, Republic of Moldova), Boyajyan Center for the Arts (Prague, Czech Republic), and at private collections in Europe, Asia and in the USA. This work was exhibited in 2015 in 2015 Myths, Folk Art Museum after Hovhannes Sharambeyan. Yerevan, Armenia. Exhibit coordinator: Armine Beglaryan; and at the Art Expo, New York, April 21-24, 2017, organized by Redwood Art...

'Big Sausage Pizza' UAP Polich Tallix Foundry Chromium Steel Sculpture by XVALA
By XVALA
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
Made from a real pizza nestled in its original box opened using high-chromium stainless steel, the piece measures 16" x 16" x 21", weighs approximately 80 pounds and is an Artist Proof. The artist sees his creation as a reflection of the cultural distortions represented by memes, a statement he has expressed perfectly in his reflective, yet unevenly textured, medium. "You look at your reflection [in the piece], and it's distorted in the stainless steel." The piece was born in 2007, just as the social internet was beginning to explode out of the digital back rooms and onto the world stage under the watchful eyes of Myspace, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, Tumblr, and other popular platforms. But Big Sausage Pizza was conceived well before that, in the Wild West days of the internet when few truly public forums existed and media of every kind was most commonly shared via email. In those days one never knew what to expect from a link or an attachment and each click had equal odds of either brightening your day with a dancing baby or posing a risk to your computer, your dignity, or your relationships... and that was half the fun. Every recipient of these images, videos, or audio files suddenly had the means not only to pass them along to as many people as they pleased, but to change and individualize them before sending them on. In this way, the media very quickly mutated and were distributed around the globe. In other words, they became true memes. Pizza has evolved in much the same way. Like the internet, it started as an artifact of a specific culture, but today both are so common throughout the world that most of us can barely remember a time when they were special and exotic. Just as the internet simply IS, pizza also simply IS. We used to make pizza at home, or at least buy it in a place where they were handmade and offered a limited list of toppings. Today, the meme that is pizza is brought to our tables by an almost entirely mechanized process, and it's so wildly mutated that each individual has the ability to create a new twist on the old...
