About the Item

Suzanne Caporael No. 003, 2008 Collage on paper 4 3/4 x 7 inches 12.1 x 17.8 cm signed lower right verso (MMG#18886) $4,000 -- Caporael continues her profound exploration of the nature of color, surface, and aesthetics. Her calm, yet invigorating paintings, composed of multiple veiled layers of oil paint, employ an aesthetic inherent to the experience of the real world. The artist’s ongoing investigation of rich colors, decisive placement of shapes, and juxtaposing forms makes her work endlessly inventive. The multiplicity of subjects in Caporael’s recent paintings are a departure from her previous focus on a particular subject or theme. Created under the staggering weight of current events, the paintings became a visual polyphony - an unshaped narrative of transient efforts to hold onto a thought long enough to paint it. Rather than developing variations on a single theme, the body of Caporael’s paintings reveals a certain flair and grace - a play of variations that are not rule-governed. What joins them as a group is the highly distinctive method and style that revives one’s interest in the aesthetics of art.

Isca Greenfield-Sanders Lake, 2022 Mixed media oil on canvas 17 x 17 inches 43.2 x 43.2 cm Signed, dated, titled (verso) -- Greenfield-Sanders’ landscape paintings invite the viewer into nostalgia, to forge a connection to their own experience. Using found vintage photography as a starting point, she creates several iterations of each image, which she alters with pencil and watercolor, and finally paints over with oil. They emerge simultaneously familiar yet enigmatic. She elaborates, stating, “All of my paintings are based on amateur slides from seventy years ago. I am interested in the ‘comfortably familiar’ nature of the images and how the elapsed time allows them to ‘prickle with new meaning’ to connect that which was worth capturing with that which is worth painting, at present.” The paintings require a great deal of forethought and groundwork, but still appear unlabored and fresh. Her style of painting, which prizes color, representation and evocation, is activated by both individual experience and collective memory. Isca Greenfield-Sanders (b. in 1978 in New York City) received her dual BFA and BA degree from Brown University. The artist lives and works in New York, NY. Recent solo exhibitions include “The Things I Can’t Forget,” Miles McEnery Gallery, New York, NY; “Ocean Eyes of Blue,” Michael Reid...
