Takefumi Hori
"Circle No. 170" Round Neutral Mixed Media Artwork with Texture and Metal Leaf

About the Item

This piece is round and 36 inches in diameter. Takefumi Hori was born in 1978 in Tokyo, Japan. Takefumi studied Japanese calligraphy before moving to New York in 2004. Once in New York, he started painting abstract paintings with acrylic on canvas. Since 2009, Takefumi has been creating abstract paintings using gold leaf and paint made with gold. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. The main inspiration of Takefumi’s paintings is the energy and ambitious nature of the people of New York City. This resonates with his own ambition as an artist. To express that energy and desire, Takefumi adopted gold as the material for his paintings. While exploring The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Takefumi was inspired by the gold ornamentation found in decorative art from the 18th and 19th centuries, along with high-end fashion accessories. As objects of desire, they represent one’s sophistication, success, and status in society. “My techniques of painting are broadened and encouraged by these sophisticated designs. Layering gold and paint, scratching and scraping the surface, and mixing various kinds of gold creates visual depth in my paintings and reflects light in different ways depending on the angle of view. Through my experiments with painting, I have found that compositional elements such as circles, squares, and rectangles are ideal forms for gold to work with other colors. My compositions of these elements are based on my experience with Japanese calligraphy: I place the center of visual weight to the lower left and create movement to the upper right of a canvas. This is to represent my intention of merging Eastern art traditions with Western art.”

    By Hyunmee Lee

"My art practice crosses three continents over two decades. The works consider the images and ideas that mark my journey into the spiritual and cultural dimensions of painting as a creative activity. During a period when I have carried adventurous journeys across several different social and geographic divides, I began to search deeper for an understanding of who I am, and where I am. My paintings started to explore the idea of self as the most fundamental element of human nature; I tried to seek my identity as I examined human nature." Hyunmee Lee was born in Seoul Korea, where she grew up practicing Western Modern art with experience in Eastern painting...

  • Golden Lore IV - contemporary mixed media collage gold abstract
    By Russell Frampton
    Located in London, GB
This recent body of work is informed by my continuing research into the physical and metaphorical nature of archaeological artefacts and votive objects, allied to the referencing of the symbolic forms and materiality of alchemy. Central to this practical investigation has been the use of ‘gold’, and the qualities that the material, with its obvious chromatic and symbolic values, seems to possess. This has driven both the conceptual and pragmatic concerns within the evolution of this work. Gold is an alluring and complex symbol of many, often conflicting meanings, avarice, greed, wealth but also of purity and celebration, and has been used as the adornment of spiritual and religious iconography as a devotional act for millennia. The titles refer to connections I have made with the forms themselves, often when making a painting a word will emerge which acts as a form of poetic catalyst. ‘Parsival’ or Percivale/Peredur was the knight questing for the holy grail...
