About the Item

Artist Tang Xuan Doan uses bold colours, bravura brushwork and streaks to capture the unique beauty, strength and melancholy of people, focusing on the beauty that comes within. Tang ties in emotional qualities within his paintings to draw the viewer further into his narrative in the same way that poetic field notes serve as part documentation and part expression. Most importantly, Tang’s passionate work translates his experiences of studying the cultural landscapes of the remote mountainous Northwest Vietnam, luring us above and underneath the surface to see the beauty in historical topography and culture. “The nature and people in the mountains of North Vietnam play a massive impact, and have been haunting my head for decades; they are the main influence behind my artworks. I love to observe and feel the lives of the ethnic minority people that are surrounded by an abundance of picturesque mountains, and a layering of clouds. The nature and lives there are infinitely pure. Nature and humans are completely inseparable". The art of lacquer-painting is ancient, originating in China more than a thousand years ago. The Vietnamese imported the technique centuries ago. After the French established École de Beux Arts d ́Indochine in Hanoi in 1925, the technique was applied to paintings, usually with traditional landscape motives, thus creating a new art form. Lacquer has gone through a long road to be widely used today. About two millenaries ago, Vietnamese people already knew how to process raw lacquer to decorate and protect their daily objects, furniture and architectures from being destroyed by nature. Objects made of bamboo, fabric, wood, or leather once covered by lacquer will be glossy and watertight with colours lasting for a long time. Yet, only by thorough study and research of Vietnamese art students of Inso-Chinese University of fine arts could lacquer painting officially be born, marking a turning point of Vietnamese fine arts. Specifically, Tran Van Can, Pham Hau, Nguyen Sang, Duong Bich Lien, Nguyen Gia Tri... are pioneering artists in the introduction and development of modern lacquer painting, inherently originating from the simple decoration of architectural motifs in temples, pagodas and traditional handicrafts. Apart from the traditional material being lacquer, modern lacquer painting could not be completed without materials such as egg, crab and snail shells, silver and gold sheets; colour tones are also not confined to three main traditional colours, brown, black and vermilion. Painting with lacquer is a meticulous and time-consuming process, to create a truly lacquer picture, it would take about 5 to 6 months and artists have to go through about 20 stages. A lacquer-painting is very durable and strong and not easily damaged. The surface is protective, and the painting can easily be polished by the palm of the hand to make it cleaner or more lustrous. Vietnamese lacquer painting is a leading contender for the country’s most impressive art form. A Vietnamese lacquer painting is truly a piece of art that will last for generations.
