About the Item

Veronika Suschnig Soft Skills No. 030, 2023 Mixed media, cotton gauze on stretcher Framed, signed 100 x 70 cm Unique A net can catch anything. It’s an in-between space, like a filter, through which thoughts do not merely pass, but get caught up, hung up or stuck without losing their free perspective on what lies before or behind them. The net as rhythmic moment of suspension, and as an organism that stretches itself out and connects everything. Gauze is a mesh fabric woven flat from cotton. It is used for dressing and bandaging wounds, for polishing in intaglio printing processes, and in Veronika Suschnig's complex work "Soft Skills," which has been ongoing since 2019. Here, the artist interrogates not only the relationships of proximity and distance exacerbated by the Covid pandemic years, but general interpersonal shifts in communication behavior. The Duden defines "soft skill" as "competence in the interpersonal sphere, ability to deal with other people." But these skills are becoming thinner and thinner, the artist observes, much like the apparent thread that weaves the forms of the "Soft Skills" series, shimmering glazed and shadowy. Acrylic ribbons that cling to the fabric, just as the fabric usually covers wounds. Healing and the traces of wounds are repeated themes in Veronika Suschnig's work, which encourages more attention in juxtaposition and togetherness. This is evident not only in the "Soft Skills" series, but also in the "Pain Poems" and "Pain Patterns" — notes glued into rose thorns — or in the "Drugtales", set pieces of text fragments drawn on empty tablet cases. “Turn soft and lovely anytime you have the chance”, as Jenny Holzer says. A complex working process is behind the seemingly porous images of "Soft Skills". Ink drawings are mirrored from analog to digital space, where they are alienated by superimpositions and displacements, only to find their way back to the gauze — covered stretcher frame by means of silkscreen printing, where the acrylic paint is pressed impasto style through the grid of the fabric, creating an inimitable three —dimensional feel. The stretcher frame remains visible, foreground and background alternate and dissolve. The three-dimensional and expansive thinking that is essential in all of Suschnig's work series also emerged from her preoccupation with architecture. Born in 1989 in Korneuburg near Vienna, Veronika Suschnig not only studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Daniel Richter, but also completed a degree in architecture. Currently, after a brief apprenticeship with Heimo Zobernig, the artist is enrolled in Nora Schultz's sculpture class, where her personal interest has expanded even further from "sculptural panel paintings" to spatial installations. Thus Suschnig also captures the gallery space holistically, moving a room structure composed of a floor installation and window-like pictorial works into her first solo exhibition at Agnes Reinthaler. The result is a dialogical interplay of spatial sculptures and pictorial objects — here in this space, as in Veronika Suschnig's entire way of thinking, communication is essential. She questions the slow loss of body language in the context of digitalization and encourages an exchange on that level as well — because Veronika Suschnig's works are best understood by moving around them. - Paula Watzl, Parnass Artmagazine –
