Chanel N˚5, 1997 Advertising poster (after Andy Warhol) Published by Chanel in 1997, in conjunction with the Andy Warhol Foundation to promote a limited package series of Chanel No. 5 inspired by Warhol's original Chanel 1980s paintings. fantastic vintage pop art featuring rich hues of blue, red, and gold, and green which brings this simple rectangular bottle to life. Offset lithograph in colors affixed to elegant medium weight linen canvas backing Overall dimensions: 24 x 32 inches (image 22 x 29 inches). Ready to frame. Minor surface wear lower left and some scattered traces of handling; otherwise very good condition Trademark of the Andy Warhol Foundation on upper left. Andy Warhol printed signature featured on lower left. 1st edition, 1st printing 1997, unknown edition size. Further History In 1985, Warhol committed the spare, instantly recognizable square bottle to art. He created nine silk screens, two oil paintings and many sketches, some of which are owned by Chanel corporate and are displayed in the 57th Street New York American offices. In spring 1997, Chanel offered a limited edition campaign for Chanel No. 5, calling the synergy a meeting of 'two works of art.' According to Lyle Saunders, a then vice president Chanel, "We have an arrangement with the Andy Warhol Foundation. It's very much a two-way street with them being a non-profit dedicated to the support and perpetuation of Andy's work. This is a worldwide campaign which will last until the end of the year." It seems appropriate that Coco Chanel, whose contemporaries included Picasso, Dali and Cocteau, be immortalized by another of the century's commercial icons, Warhol. 'Other artists have interpreted No. 5 but not to the extent that Warhol did,' explained Saunders. 'This is the only fragrance he did along with the soup cans and the Brillo pads.' 'It's the nature of the Warhol phenomenon - it's in multiples, it's bright, it's loud. It's very commercial.
