Artist Faye Vander Veer depicts a tender story of a young mother and her child standing together at the water's edge. The setting evokes the sense of a cool day with a gentle breeze. The mother's hand rests gently on her child's shoulder. "I frequently go to the oceanfront near me for inspiration," says Faye. "On this particular day, I saw this mother and child, watching in anticipation for the dolphins to jump out of the water." Every time Faye looks at the photographs she took, she feels a sense of peace."
About the Artist
Artist Faye Vander Veer seeks out moments with engaging narratives and captures them with an impressionist style. Her dramatic use of color, texture, light and shadow lend a glowing quality, creating an energy all their own. While using her own photographs as a general reference, it is her sensory memory of the event and her emotional reaction that is conveyed on the canvas, causing the viewer to be transported to another time and place. “Painting becomes a language I use to express my emotional response to what is before me and share my experience of the subject with others,“ says Faye.

John Robertson Reid was born in Edinburgh and studied at the Royal Scottish Academy schools before moving to Cornwall and later London. He became interested in the social-realist movement; probably influenced by Bastien-Lepage and in 1879 his “Toil and Pleasure” was hung in the Royal Academy and bought by the Chantrey Bequest. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy and at the Royal Society of British Artists and also the Royal Institute, he was a member of all three Institutes.
