"A young woman in a polka dotted dress stands in waiting, dreaming of the night ahead," says Gena. Bold repeated strokes of pinks rhythmically move across the foreground and in the distance. Other whimsical line work defines the figure and environment. Afternoon light rests on the face and shoulders, offering depth and setting mood. Part of Gena's ongoing Illumination series, exploring mood and emotion through abstract portraits. She begins each piece with a dark background, adding fast, autonomous and broad marks. As the work progresses, she reveals and wipes away a history of her mark-making, selectively deciding what imagery to keep and what to discard. She continues the process until recognizable imagery and figures materialize. Her reference material for these portraits is mostly color schemes observed in nature or from memory.
About the Artist
Gena Brodie Robbins was raised in Tifton, Georgia where both of her parents were teachers and coaches. When the family went to the beach in the summers, her dad taught her how to paint on sand dollars. She learned how to paint sunsets using the Walter Foster “How to” booklets at the local hobby shop. Gena was also trained at a young age to sing, however, she did not love Latin lyrics and had horrible stage fright - but she knew that she loved visual arts. So, she formally studied art at Valdosta State University with a BFA in Art Education, earned an MFA in Painting at Savannah College of Art and Design, and won a studio space in NYC through SCAD at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts. Gena began painting full time after receiving a diagnosis of Generalized Myasthenia Gravis, after moving from Savannah to Atlanta. Her current body of work stems from an interest in the Bay Area Figurative movement of the 1950's and 60's. She explores the various emotions and moods that can be visually created through subtle lighting in combination with the abstract human form. Her painting process involves an immersive experience, where she ends up practically covered in paint, and Gena says that her dogs and cat leave the studio from time to time with a bright green tail or white paws. When she’s not in the studio, Gena is teaching others to paint, enjoying a pot of tea while writing poetry, reading a crime novel, or hiking the Appalachian trails with her labs in the north Georgia mountains.

Artist Gail Ragains paints abstract figurative works defined by strong color combinations and intuitive mark-making. "I approach each creative process as an open-ended improvisation," says Gail. "It is an evolving journey without preconceived plans for a predictable outcome. I react to the materials at hand, stripping away the non-essentials to give a loose interpretation of form, movement, and human expression." Inspired by the physical gestures and emotions of people, the human figure dominates Gail's art. As a young person, Gail was active in dance, ice skating, and gymnastics and competed in triathlons in her 20s. While pursuing a career as a massage therapist for 25 years, Gail simultaneously attended art classes through community colleges, the local Art League, and workshops with artists she admires. Having lived in California her entire life, Gail is influenced by the California colors—golden hills, clear blue skies, swimsuits, and swimming pools. Today, her studio is in her backyard just a few steps away from the home she shares with her husband. “In this workspace, I have everything I need. Artist Diana Chelaru paints colorful expressionist interpretations of human emotion. “Art is a means of communication, it is how I express my thoughts, hopes, regrets, and joys,†says Diana. She experiments with working on large-scale paintings using the visual language of form, lines, and color to create compositions that exist only in her imagination. Growing up in Romania, she draws inspiration from Byzantine mosaics as well as Gustav Klimt’s subject matter and use of decorative patterns. She received her BFA in Painting from George Enescu Art University and finished her MA in Art History from Queens College. Diana simply goes with the flow rather than dwelling on the formulaic process. It all depends on how and what she feels at the moment.
