About the Item

War and Peace Movie - Manuscript is an Autograph Letter Signed by Gianna Manzini to Maria De Matteis. Rome, June 2nd 1955. One page, double-sided. In Italian. Excellent condition, except for minor aging signs. The Italian writer and journalist, Gianna Manzini, writes this letter to the Italian talented costume designer, Maria De Matteis, to ask information about the promising "War and Peace" movie, that will be awarded by Oscar nominations for Best Director (King Vidor), Best Cinematography, Color (Jack Cardiff) and Best Costume Design, Color (Maria De Matteis). Gianna Manzini would write an article about one of the greatest film of all the times, that was about to be produced shortly! Gianna Manzini (1896 – 1974) The Italian writer, Gianna Manzini, is still today best-known for “Ritratto in piedi” that won the Campiello Prize in 1971. The 1940s and 1950s were a time of intense and personal literary activity and of investigation of international literature. Her works appeared in such periodicals as Campo di Marte, Letteratura, Oggi, La Fiera Letteraria, Milano-Sera, and Gazzetta del Popolo. Recognition for her writing grew with literary prizes awarded for Lettera all'editore (Premio Costume 1945), Valtzer del diavolo (Premio Soroptimist 1953), La Sparviera (Viareggio Prize 1956), Un'altra cosa (Premio Marzotto 1951), Allegro con disperazione (Premio Napoli 1968), and finally her last novel, Ritratto in piedi, was awarded the Premio Campiello in 1971. War and Peace is a movie produced in 1956, based on the same-named epic historical drama by Toltsoy. Directed by King Vidor with a screenplay by Vidor, Bridget Boland, Mario Camerini, Ennio De Concini, Gian Gaspare Napolitano, Ivo Perilli, Mario Soldati, and Robert Westerby. The film, an Italian-American co-production released by Paramount Pictures, was produced by Dino De Laurentiis and Carlo Ponti with a music score by Nino Rota and cinematography by Jack Cardiff. The film stars were Audrey Hepburn, Henry Fonda, and Mel Ferrer, along with Oskar Homolka, Vittorio Gassman, Herbert Lom, John Mills and Anita Ekberg. This was a succesfull movie because it was awarded by Oscar nominations for Best Director (King Vidor), Best Cinematography, Color (Jack Cardiff) and Best Costume Design, Color (Maria De Matteis). Maria De Matteis (Florence, 1898 - Rome, 1988) Maria De Matteis is still today famous in the world of cinema and theater as a costume designer. The teachings of Gino Carlo Sensani and professional experiences alongside directors such as Luchino Visconti, Orson Welles, Vittorio De Sica and Mario Soldati, led her to carry out a research based on the careful analysis of the intimate nature of the characters she dresses, and to find a personal stylistic code, in accordance with the various directorial intentions. She received the “Nastro d’Argento” twice, first in 1953 for The Golden Carriage (1952) directed by Jean Renoir, then in 1961 for Mario Bonnard's Gastone (1960), while in 1957 he had obtained an Oscar nomination for War and peace (1955; War and Peace) by King Vidor. In 1971 she was awarded with the BAFTA Film Award for costumes of Sergej F. Bondarčuk's Waterloo movie(1970).

GQ was owned by Conde Nast, and Alexander Liberman, who worked for Conde Nast for 32 years, was the Editorial Director from 1962-1983. Hardcover. Bound in publisher's original white cloth with spine and front cover stamped in black. Full color illustrations throughout, including several color foldouts. 392 pages. About Alexander Liberman: Considered a revolutionary Minimalist artist, Alexander Liberman produced works that predated the movement by more than a decade. Liberman, not wanting to limit himself to any one form of expression, worked to produce radically minimalist paintings and sculpture in order to illuminate his beliefs about celestial motion, the movement of the eye, as well as human sexuality. The artist’s fascination with American industrialization and modernization ultimately resulted in his widely known red steel sculptures and geometric paintings, which seem to decompose the turbulence of the time period. Alexander Liberman was born in 1912 in Kiev, Russia. He studied first in London and then in Paris. He took courses in philosophy and mathematics at the Sorbonne and architecture at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Liberman has had numerous solo exhibitions at museums such as the Jewish Museum, New York (1966); Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, NY (1970); and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1970). His sculpture and paintings are included in the museum collections of the Art Institute, Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the Tate Gallery, London and many others. Additionally his public sculpture can be seen in over 40 cities around the world including Honolulu, Los Angeles, Miami, New Haven, New York, Oklahoma City and Philadelphia. Alexander Liberman died in November of 1999 at the age of 87. - Courtesy of Mitchell-Innes & Nass About Barbara Rose: Barbara Ellen Rose (June 11, 1936 – December 25, 2020) was an American art historian, art critic, curator and college professor. Rose's criticism focused on 20th-century American art, particularly minimalism and abstract expressionism, as well as Spanish art. "ABC Art...
