"Animate Field" - An Immersive Light & Sound Sculpture Installation

2024

About the Item

Animate Field presents a field of hanging fiber-optic filaments which form a volumetric mass for participants to physically enter and move through. The red lit endpoints of the filaments are activated at the participants’ location in the field. By touching and moving through the fiber-optic filaments, participants physically engage with Animate Field and activate a light animation (among the floating and glowing endpoints) that is both startling yet subtle. As they wade through the thicket of filaments, they create trails of yellow light which persist as a kind of temporal residue, leaving ghostly memories of their traveled paths. The hanging fibers delicately graze the skin of the participants, whose physical presence in turn causes ripples and waves throughout the mass of filaments. When participants are together inside the fibers of Animate Field, it can become a dynamic social space. Conversely, the installation also functions well as a contemplative light sculpture when viewed from outside the field. *** SHIPPING WITHIN UNITED STATES $2500 *** ADDITIONAL INSTALLATION FEES FOR SET UP AND PROGRAMMING- CONTACT GALLERY Justin Lui is an artist pursuing responsive media in the physical world, exploring the intersections between media art and architecture, in order to create objects, spaces and surfaces which are dynamic and intelligent. This pursuit is catalyzed by a desire to create a sense of bodily engagement between participant and installation space; so that the body’s sensory mechanisms and its physical location can be utilized to create mutual relationships between people and space. The result can be phenomenological (by evoking certain emotions or internal states of being) and can also be behavioral (how a space can dynamically change and respond when subjected to patterns of human use). While media artists often create work that resides within the given boundaries of screens (small and large), Justin usually opts to explode and re-materialize visual content beyond the constraints of conventional screens. In a world where high resolution imagery has become commonplace, his work often uses the subtlety of lower-res visual content. The materials he uses include LEDs, re- purposed plastic containers, fiber-optic threads, and code. Justin’s formal training was in architecture, and he includes UX (user experience) design, DJing and music production in his mix of skills. Currently based in Los Angeles, Justin was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, and has previously worked in New York City, Toronto, and Berlin. Justin is a graduate of the UCLA Design Media Arts MFA program, and also holds an M.Arch II degree from UCLA Architecture and Urban Design, as well as a B.Arch degree from the Carleton University School of Architecture.
