Naoe KOIDE
Bizen Ceramic Ware Avant Garde Vase

2020

About the Item

Naoe Koide, a distinguished Bizen Ware Potter, reflected on his lifelong journey, one ignited by a profound curiosity about the concealed marvels within the world. In his childhood, he vexed his parents by disassembling electrical appliances with a screwdriver, captivated by the concealed mechanisms beneath their casings. Over time, he came to realize that, akin to these hidden wonders, the natural world remains concealed beneath the veneer of industrial society. As he matured, a fascination with the extraordinary human capacity to transmute raw materials into something entirely novel awakened within him. This transformative epiphany was further fueled when he encountered the potter Harada Shuroku and embarked on an apprenticeship under his tutelage, solidifying his devotion to the enchanting realm of Bizen. Koide's magnetic attraction to a certain clay, one that beckons irresistibly to the touch, was indicative of his unwavering fascination with the raw materials he expertly crafts. Since his youth, Koide had been captivated by the tactile process of crafting and designing a diverse array of objects. Thus, his journey naturally led him to Bizen Ware, the oldest form of Japanese pottery boasting a millennium of tradition. The allure of Bizen Ware lies in its distinctive quality of being unglazed earthenware, known as "yakishime." By forgoing glazing, the clay reveals its unique texture, as minerals and impurities retained within the clay surface during firing in high-temperature kilns burst forth, crafting the distinctive character of Bizen Ware. This is precisely the essence that Koide endeavored to encapsulate in his finished creations - the unrefined allure of the earth itself.
