Shiro Shimizu
Grey ceramic bowl by Shiro Shimizu with gold kintsugi

2017

About

This Japanese ceramic bowl is by Shiro Shimizu, from his famous Kyoto studio. Shown in our Tea Ceremony exhibition which opened in May 2018. The grandson of celebrated late ceramicist Uichi Shimizu, Shiro Shimizu hails from a lineage of pottery masters who dedicate themselves to the study and discovery of speciality clay used by ancient potters and the mysterious beauty of iron glazes. Shiro Shimizu has himself built a reputation and has shown work in exhibitions throughout Japan and China. This delicate bowl shows is finished with an unusually elegant, slightly reflective pale grey glaze. The base is particularly elegant and hints at some of the great designs of early Japanese pottery. Broken and reassembled using the traditional Japanese kintsugi technique with a pure gold finish.
